Picked up this pretty nice looking 5 Mark 1914 A coin in a garbage “NNC” holder. I am well aware that NNC holders are utter waste products in terms of grading, but the coin looked pretty nice to me. Any opinions, grading, etc? I know to treat NNC coins as if they were raw, but this one looked good to a collector of “crown sized” coins. Opinions, please, as this 5 mark series is only moderately familiar. Does it look MS? To me, it looks like a 63 or so.
I would have bought that. Always buy the coin . . . . Some smart Morgandude taught me that . . . . . . Z
It looks nice overall but the two hits in the fields might bring it down. I'm also seeing some haze in the fields (or is it just the photo)?
That is toning. The coin has some spots of tone. I don’t think it is a 65, as that basement slab company notoriously overgrade. I have it at 63?
Luster is great, and there are some toning spots on both sides. I see it as 63 conservatively, with an outside shot at 64. It is no gem, obviously.
Garbage slab, but it is an overall attractive coin. In my opinion, just by going off the posted images, I'd guess it would warrant a grade of MS-63.
That's a fine looking coin and I wish it were mine. I'd like to see better photos, but Zoid's prediction of a 64 doesn't seem unreasonable.
I like the coin. To he honest I don't look for perfection though or worry about grade if it appeals to me.
My friend at NGC, who was a grader, and now works for corporate looked at the pictures. He shared them with a head grader. Their opinion is it is a 64. They told me to send it in and not crack it out—they will consider it a raw submission. Both thought it a 64, and possibly a 64+ on a good day. So, it gets submitted.
I agree, presuming there are no hidden problems in those photos (they aren't the best from the eBay seller) - I'd peg it for an MS64 grade also. Nice snag for a good price.
Yes, I think it was a good snag. $82.50, for a coin that goes for about $150-175 slabbed. Add the cost of having it certified, and I am happy.
