You guys have me rethinking my number, but I was going to go 4.1. I'll admit, the obverse is slightly negative eye appeal to me.
I am wondering if it is the pictures. The coin may be a lot nicer than the pictures, and the images are bringing the coin’s appeal down.
I agree with you, but was thinking 3.4 as my first gut reaction. Obverse toning is a slight negative as it’s just pale brown.
4.9 ...higher grade and dual sided color but there are a few too many toning breaks which hold it back in my opinion
5.0. Reverse is gorgeous. A really nice album toned Franklin. Great rainbows on both sides, and the brown crusty tone, characteristic of 1958 toned Frankies. I like it! High grade, and luster a big plus.
Overall a 4.5 for me. The reverse toning range is superb, but the spots of no toning are distracting. The obverse toning is lovely, but also suffers some of the same spottled appearance of the reverse. Obv=4, rev=5.
Franklin 3.0. I just dont like that spotty golden brown toning. I see a lot of Washington quarters with this toning and find it very unappealing too. The album rainbow crescents are nice which is why I even went this high. This is not a coin I would buy but that’s why we all have our opinions
I'm still on the Morgan spectrum, little bands of color goes like 3.1. I don't mind the spottiness and I think I would really like this on the Morgan.
My rating of that Franklin was 5.5. My photos don’t do the vibrancy of the colors justice and it still ranks as the best toned Franklin I’ve ever seen in hand, and that’s not a small statement, my brother has the 7th ranked set in the NGC Registry.
I thought it was at the very least, a 5. Can’t understand any rating less than the 5 level with those rainbows. Each to their own, but it is a beautiful coin, and would command a hefty premium. After all, NGC thought it deserved a star for color. Guess they knew what premium toning is.
In fairness, the people judging this coin are only seeing my photos. My guess is that an in hand inspection of this coin would raise their score by an entire point. This is the part of the Heritage description that describes the color: Colorful 1958-D Franklin Half, MS67 1958-D 50C MS67 ★ NGC.A highly lustrous and immensely appealing example. Lemon-yellow, violet, peach, and reddish colors combine over each side of this vibrant Superb Gem.
