For my birthday, I received a few really neat coins from my father. One of them is a coin I've never even heard of before.

A hand-struck silver fuang, or 1/8 tical coin!

This is rather unusual because it was hand-struck in 1847 or so, when most of the world seems to have gone to machine striking. Also, it's uniface with only one side.

It features a "hamza" bird representing knowledge.

It's rather small, at 15x12mm and weighing 12g.

Very nice! I have a 2 pe coin (half fuang) from the same time (c.1847), which also shows a hamza bird but with the Chinese character "Chi" above:

Maybe I'm missing something, but that looks like the character hui2 to me: 回

I've got a softspot for these early Cambodia coins, they look more ancient than some finer Greek coins from 2,000+ years ago.

Those are fun coins. I used to have one but sold it years ago. Unfortunately, I didn't save the pictures to share. Great present though.

You're not missing something, but my coin is. ;) The top part of the character is off the flan on my example. Here's a photo of another specimen that I found on the Web that shows the Chinese better:

Here's my personal 2 pe coin. I bought it because I like uniface coins for some Polish_20200914_163947456.jpg reason.

I too have a 2 pe. These are very cheap given their obvious popularity! I'm hoping it brings me lots of 吉...
