I am considering purchasing an 1804 cent off ebay, but I'm hesitant. On this coin. The 4 looks all wrong, as if it is altered, below are the photos. What do you think? Thank you so much.

It is obviously an alter date...that's why in the title of the ad it says "1804 tooled/altered date" and in the ad says " Obviously not a genuine 1804."

I can't tell what date it was originally in the photos because they are so bad, but I would not touch this coin.

You said: "I have read the definitive illustrated 1976 edition of "the standard catalog of counterfeit and altered coins" it features a length section on your coin, ... Also I have 2 counterfeits, and 6 colonials."

So, shouldn't you know a fake when you see one?

I was just wondering if there was a chance that it was not altered. Thanks so much.

No, zero chance. Plus, this coin typically exhibits a broken die along the rim from about 12:30 to 2:00 on authentic examples...not always, but it is considered normal.

Oh, I don't know. Will this be anything like the 1914-D Lincoln Cent? Or the "Authentic" Racketeer Nickel?

That was a great deal though. it's an EF, got it for $7. The red book values it at $500, therefore it was an excellent purchase.

Well, Red Book prices are not something you should really use. Heritage auction prices are a much more realistic and up to date source for coin values. However, both sources do assume that the coin is authentic. For cheap Chinese counterfeits, those prices don't apply.

I would venture to say that it is an 1807 altered to appear as an 1804!

How about this, I'll send it to SGS in a few weeks. And I'll get back to you on if they certify it or not, and what grade they give it.

    I agree, 1807 looks like it's a good bet...the pics aren't the best, but that's probably it.
