It's the new members who don't realize the dates of the threads. It's ok, there are times when they present something good and they are told to start a new thread. Some listen and many don't.
Its sad but the answers to the questions the new members ask are already given but they don't bother to read it.

The coin dealer was probably just being sarcastic, I hope. If not, that is one ignorant coin dealer.

Probably the same batch of individuals who post pix of a street cleaner coin and ask how it got this way at the mint and how much it's worth.

What I don't understand is that these type of cranks continually test the IQ of the contributors to CT. Are they deliberately doing this or are they just that stupid. I for one enjoy the expertise shown by many contributors, and have learned quite a bit in the past year. Thanks y'all!

I think @dodo bird did it as a goof, their one and only post. That being said, so few people, look at their coins, it isn't much of a surprise.

    Looks Mercury coated?

Could be the latest test subject at the rechroming plant.
Cents get coated with Nickel first then chrome.

If you enlarge the admittedly poor images, that coin was showing proper cartwheel luster. Most likely it was a legitimate non-plated zinc cent. (Non-plated as in the copper plating was never applied, not un-plated as in the copper plating was removed. And a post mint plating would almost certainly have eliminated the cartwheel luster. A thin plating won't disturb details, but will almost certainly fill the microscopic flow lines that create the cartwheel luster.)

I know he hasn't, but many of the recent comments are calling it plated or altered, and from my examination of the original images I say that he actually had the real thing. And I explained why. Too often when someone posts a "silver cent" people knee jerk and call it plated or altered and I think that has happened here with the recent replies. But if you EXAMINE the images it has all the hallmarks of the real thing.

Going back and looking at it, I have to somewhat agree with you. Wish he were still here to get better pics.

how do I add a pic. I have a 2000-D silver penny that is blemish free and doesn't look polished in any way. it's as if it's pure zink

I think the correct spelling is zinc not zink :pompous:

Two things…. Folks tend to overlook these old threads. You would do best to post your own thread…… Secondly, you can bet that your cent has been plated. It happens all the time. I have two that I pulled out of pocket change.
