I read that this quarter should weigh 5.67 grams.. This one weighs 8.30 grams.. Does anyone see anything wrong?? 20200908_115345.jpg 20200908_115432.jpg 20200907_121156.jpg 20200908_102643.jpg 20200908_104808.jpg

The gold plating will add a good amount to the weight, I'm sure that is the difference.

When the State Quarters program began, the TV coin hucksters came up with the bright idea of creating an entire collection of SQ's plated in gold, silver and platinum and selling them at outrageous prices. These were all coins that would not have graded high by any of the TPG's, but the hucksters did not want to just dump them into circulation at face value.

    Your scale shows 5.83 not 8.30 o_O

Doesn't matter.. Gold plated coins are damaged coins. Altered and only worth face value.

As a thought, how could you tell if the coins were REALLY Platinum plated...

Because they were advertised as such. Keep in mind that the gold, silver and platinum used to plate the quarters was sooooooooo thin that it barely amounted to a few cents each.

My point exactly, just advertise them as Pt plated and sell the raw coins...

plated coins are sold as souvenirs or whatever to people. Since they are plated after they left the mint all the plating is considered damage.

you can find them in various plating on various websites such as merrickmint.com

I realize that.. Because the 1970 dime with the 1968 proof variety reverse I put on here was gold plated.. That's what caught my attention to start with.. Most of the gold electroplating is gone so everyone said to clean it because it is not gold electroplating, but I am telling you it is..
