1822 Newcomb 14? Ebay find?

any idea why this one went for $4k

it does look like an N-14 which in Wrights book was an R-8- in 1992

 

My book only goes to N12. What are the markers on the obverse that distinguish this coin as N14?

 

moderate date no shill obverse.star 8 points between dentils.Foot of T well below foot of R. Reverse has square serif letters tiny or missing center dot.legend near wreath.

 

The leaf tip on the reverse is fully left of the F of OF

A worse example was sold by Heritage for $5581.25 in 2014. Per the Heritage listing, the die marriage was rated as R7 at the time and is one of three “stoppers” for the middle date large cents. The eBay coin does appear to be an N-14, so it was probably a good buy. I wonder if the final sale price has the seller scratching his head?

Sometimes I see this stuff and ask myself, "How could something so ugly be worth so much?"

I know the answer, but it still shocks me sometimes.

 

ok thanks!! any idea which one this is? I see the leaf left of F and no dot, but I think the letters are to large and the wreath not close enough to the legend on the back...

Looks like at least 7 of the 10 bidders knew what it was. I believe there are something like eight or nine of these known now.

 

all it took was 2 of them to know....lol
