Yes that's right the set has reached it's 1st milestone with a total of 15 coins. I hope to have the new ones in-hand by next weekend so will do the 1st full progress post showing all 15 coins then.(and maybe a few extras.. who knows a few auctions still running) Tonights addition (will post any others this weekend below if they happen) 1822.. very nice addition for only $15...
Ok.. this win was a bit of a surprise and at only $12.50.. Yeah it's getting the dbl bath when it arrives to take care of the green but i present... 1820/19
Can't wait to see your up date post. Are you going for a date set or just any nice cent for $20 or less? Is there a Dansco being filled?
yes it's a dansco 7099. While the 20/19 is not listed as one of the variants in the book, it does have a blank page at the back it will go to once i get a "regular" 1820
Nice pick ups and a shout out to your collecting on a budget. Thanks for keeping us posted on your progress.
I recently got a hella worn 1794 for $15 and sold it for $25. Had I known you were putting this set together, I would have held it for you. roached 1795 cents occasionally come by for less than $25.
This is a very good idea. A number of dealers have large cent junk boxes for cheap prices, and you can get lots of middle and late dates for very little money. Cherrypicks, of course will be rare, but that's why they're cherrypicks. Unfortunately, the same isn't true of half cents.
Our local numismatist has a shelf lined with boxes of coins from $1 to around $7. Good for fillers and some good enough to put in sets. Our granddaughter loves going through them it peeks her interest. She is our future collector and maybe even numismatist, who knows!
Yeah I bid on a lot of 1790s but very very few go for under 20-25.. I got lucky with the 1st $20 lc set had both a 98 and an 1800/99. There is only one survivor from the original set, I doubt I could ever find another for $25 nevermind one as sharp as Have.. I'm talking about my 1857 large date.. the real prize of this collection lol... I've given serious though to breaking it out and resubmitting for NGC or ANACs as the "surface damage" is a minor discoloration around the 3 lower left stars.. I think it could probably get an AU grade... or damn close... anywhere not pcgs retook the pics a 2nd and 3rd time, they do not do this coin justice...
Yes, but most are far more affordable than some things that are a lot more common, like a 1909-S VDB cent.
That 1822 was a super nice pickup for 15 bucks! The 1820/19, for the price, is also a good grab. Hope the treatment helps the verdigris.
Quite true, but like it was in the 19th century when the last half cent was issued, few collectors care about them, especially the pieces in the 1850s. A dealer who ran a weekly bidwall operation once told me that those half cents were among his hardest sells.
Even I find the Braided Hair half cents uninteresting and unattractive. Liberty has no cheekbones. Gobrecht's worst work? And, of course, the only difference between the various dates is the dates. If you've seen one, you've seen them all. They're not like any of the earlier types of half cents. Your 1855 has lots of red, but the strike, like nearly all of that date, is weak with lots of missing border beads. In 30 years, I've found and owned 3 with full borders.
