Pawns stars Rick haggles price on a Shekel of Tyre for being...cleaned?!

I mean almost all ancients have been cleaned at some point in time, frowning upon cleaning coins is only a recent trend, and it should not be an issue with the ancients when determining the price (unless it been cleaned with obviously visible streaks of hairlines or looks like it's been polished with sandpaper!

    I like the subtitles too:

"Its a sheckel of Tyre, like from the bible...

    [DRAMATIC MUSIC]"

With ancients, in particular, some sort of cleaning and or restoration is almost certainly due. I could understand if it were a more modern coin. Do people really expect ancients to pop out of the ground after hundreds or thousands of years, super shiny and untouched?

I stopped watching due to another episode they had about the same coin. I wince watching the show if its about a subject I know because they simply get SO MUCH wrong. Rick said this was from Jerusalem. Does he know the date, because only the last coins of the series were from there, the rest of the Shekels of Tyre coming from.....well......Tyre.

The truth is more interesting in what they write for that show. I simply wished they got REAL experts to write truth for the show. As it is, as I knew how much was wrong with their coin episodes I stopped watching. No sense learning lies about a subject, better to know nothing than the wrong things.

LOL, I stopped watching years ago. The negotiating process is so trite and predictable. I went to their shop years ago. Thought I would buy some US Gold. I mean, c'mon, they are a PAWN shop! Nope, they were so ridiculous with over priced premiums. A joke, and lost any of their reputation to me.

I understand sir. They do have experts in all fields, whether they identify themselves as experts or not, (still remember that dealer from Texas sending in his girlfriend who "happened to find these certified Republic of Texas bills in my grandmother's attic"). However, the script of what they say is usually so incomplete, misleading, or simply wrong for ancient coins I figured this is indicative of all of the show, and therefore not worth watching.

    Rick knows about slabs.
Beyond that he knows how to make a profit.

Do they ever show a comparison of how much they paid vs. how much that sold for.
    Anything, not just coins.

I saw one episode where Rick went to an auction that had several pieces he had bought. I remember one thing he had paid $20,000 for going for $5,000.

It's a scripted television entertainment show - if not for the lucrative TV deal and the show's popularity, it would be just another Las Vegas pawn shop buying low and selling high to make ends meet - Chumlee may have a few fields of expertise, but coins are certainly not one of those
A better bet is Antiques Road Show on PBS, where real people bring real items to be described and appraised by real experts - not many coins there, but a lot more informative and enjoyable ;)
