This week I got two Romanian 250 LEI coins out of a box of halves. One is a 1939, the other is a 1941, 83% silver. eBay shows them selling for $20-$30 or more each. Neatest things I've found in a while.

The banks collect loose coin from their customers put them in bags in their vaults then redeem them once or twice a week as the case may be through their armored car services for cash or rolled coin. Talk to the head teller and tell them you want to buy a bag of cents. If they choose to give you crap, just remember, you, as a depositor, have choices, too. There's no reason they, as agent of the bank, shouldn't do this for you, if you're a depositor. I'd close out the account right in front of the teller's eyes if they ever tried that crap on me. Hope this helps.

It depends upon a few things. You would likely get a lot of different answers to this querry if several people replied to your question. I've read some pretty creative things from guys on this forum as to how they've gotten rolls of coins to search.

When I first started searching rolls, about 4 or 5 years ago, I just walked into a branch of the bank where I had an account and asked for some rolls of halves. They had a few, maybe 50 or so total that had been sitting for years. I searched them all, like 10 rolls at a time, over the course of a couple of weeks, then asked for more. They didn't have any but the teller said she'd order some. She got a couple of boxes and I continued to go in and get 10 or 15 rolls to search at a pop.

My returns? I'd take them to that bank sometimes, sometimes to another branch of the same bank, sometimes to another bank altogether. I spread it out to keep every branch as happy as possible (fewer coins to count), and I thought I'd reduce the odds of my getting the same coins back over and over.

15 rolls at a time wasn't enough once I got the fever. I pulled together $500 and bought a box. One box led to more. After buying a few boxes over the course of about a month the head teller decided she wouldn't sell me any more. She said she needed them for her commercial customers. I thought that was baloney, so I asked to speak with a manager. The manager wanted to start charging me $20 a box for all future boxes. So, I asked her how many rolls per week I could get at no charge. She said 25. 25 it was.

I repeated this process at a couple of other banks. Some branches were more cooperative than others and, at the height of my searching, I was sorting about 3 boxes a week. Eventually the tellers stopped with the funny looks and the whole thing became routine for them. It just took a little time.

I searched regularly for 3 years before my efforts began to yield less than satisfactory results. About a year ago I stopped for about 10 months. Then, one day I was in the bank and a teller asked me why I stopped. I told her I needed a break. She said she'd be happy to order me some more boxes if I wanted to start again. So, at the end of October, I started year 4. My results have been OK thus far, and I guess I'll keep at it until I hit another long dry spell.

Hope this helps. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

I went through a box halves that I got for the Christmas vacation down time. I found three 40%. One was a 1965 that looks MS. It's like it came straight from the mint. Super score in my book. How is everyone else doing with searching half dollars, just curious?

I buy rolls of halves to give out as change but I do search them first. Usually only a stray 40%er in circ but have occasionally found curiosities like 1987 P and D and 2006 and 2007 P and D which were supposedly mint set issues only. Also got a 1986 Statue of Liberty which had found its way into circulation. I will find an occasional silver quarter in my till at work or even an impaired proof. Probably my best finds from circulation have been 1910-S and 1911-S Lincoln cents. I have also assembled most of the Jefferson nickels from circulation, everything from 1955 to date and also the 1939D. Only missing nine dates, mostly the silver war nickels. There are definitely coins out there to be found! Happy hunting!

ha. That's always fun. When I found a 1911 penny in a roll of almost all wheats I lost it and bruised my knee on the desk,

I just got started in roll hunting about 3 weeks ago. I decided to buy some Littleton folders to put sets together (obviously not the highest quality sets, but a fairly decent set nonetheless and one that can always be upgraded). I've only been able to find about 10 rolls of halves from banks so far. I've been sticking mainly to dimes and nickels. I have the last 2 Littleton folders for Jefferson nickels (62-08 I think) completely full, and probably 15 or so in the 38-61 folder. Dimes are almost done (64 and later). I also went through some quarter rolls and have a complete 64-08 set except for (oddly enough) the 1776/1976 P and 2008 P

I also asked for a roll of dollars, and got what seems to be a roll of uncirculated Martin Van Buren dollars. It's one of those double-ended shotgun rolls, and the paper on the outside is printed "Martin Van Buren" and "25 Dollars". Haven't opened it. I figure I'll save it as it is- didn't cost me anything anyway.

I wasn't aware of that either. I do keep all '02s and up because of their low mintage numbers. I've already got close to 2 rolls of '06-Ds, but I didn't know they came from mint sets only. I thought you could buy rolls/bags of them from the mint via their Web site? I checked the site a few minutes ago but found no information on 06's.

    Hmmm.....
