How secret is your hobby?

I’m a dealer. And no great secret as I want people to know I buy coins as you never know what all these old Yankees got stashed around me. But there’s heavy lead security at home. A local sheriff keeps an eye on my property as do several neighbors when I’m away. All my neighbors are armed to the teeth too. And I’m in a very low crime neighborhood as of course we’re all armed. And have a 65 pound spring loaded cabinets well as cats. Dog is all bark and annoying friendly. But he’ll run up and jump on you then proceed to give you doggy kisses. Would scare an intruder at least

And what Paddyman means it that when a collector is burglarized and their coins stolen it is amazing how often it turns out the thief is a family member or friend of a family member.

  9. I feel like a party crasher who doesn't know anyone at the party. All I am trying to do is to build an inexpensive collection of the Emperors, my analogy would be my Jed Clampett log cabin to the mansion at Beverly Hills. Most of you are light years beyond. I did have a friend of a friend steal my few bills of Silver certificates, US notes, a humiliating experience takes a while to get over. So when I replaced them I laminated them all, which included also a few new Confederates, foreign and a couple of German Inflation Reichmarks I got at a coin shop for 35 cents years ago. I am not interested in investment, just History. There is a guy on Craigslist who had a robbery five years ago and is still posting "reward offered". I asked him if the police ever took fingerprints, said "no". My take is it may have been a relative on drugs, he should have gotten a dog at least. If you can afford an expensive collection your best bet is to hire a PI right away. I am trying to get three posts into one so I stay out of trouble. Some people are collectors and some are not. I want to share the story that in 1963, my mother's cousin visited us kids temporarily in Virginia from Ohio and he gave me a 1923 Liberty Silver Dollar. Being a natural hoarder, I treasured it. One day my mother demanded I give it up as she had family laundry to do, argued as I might I had to surrender it. I reminded her about it recently and she said: "You'll never forgive me for that-will you"?. We laughed. But that was the way she was. Coins have no intrinsic interest to her.

In my case, not secret at all. Matter of fact, every cashier knows since I'm always looking at the dates and condition on all the currency I get ready to hand over to them and look at the same on everything they give back to me. And if there's a coin tray sitting next to the register with coins in it, I sometimes pick up a coin or two out of it just to check to see if it's something I'd be interesting in exchanging change for. Used to come across quite a few Wheaties that way. But as of this past year or so, none found at all in the coin dishes.

What if you clear out the cookies every so often and/or before shutting down the computer? Can it still track?

I keep a low profile in my neighborhood. My family obviously knows. I do have a few close friends who are celebrated collectors, so we do share a lot. I am not worried about the security aspects, as my home is well protected, as am I. I would think that more people on this board know about my collecting than other folks do.

Im open about my collecing but I dont tell everyone I meet. I show people some of my buys. My key thing is I dont tell people how much I spend and I dont tell people what its worth. To them its just a quarter. To me its a 1932 D PCGS MS 62 washington quarter.
