Is it normal for newer penny rolls to have so much spotting on coins? Lately every roll I buy whether 2017-D or 16-D etc....has lots of spotting. Do I need another source or is this common? Any thoughts

The pennies are rolled by a third party vendor, who receives them in ballistic bags that weigh a couple of tons. There is no way of knowing what sort of protection from the elements that these bags receive before the coins are rolled and distributed.

So you are saying that this is a common occurrence?

I suspect oils and/or grease from the minting process and who knows how clean the rolling process is. I also suspect the SOP is 'Get them in, get them rolled and get them out.'
