Pretty coin but I personally don’t care much for that color scheme.
On the “monster scale” I give it a 2.5.

My personal score on the 1868 Maundy 4P is a 3.5.

For those of you not familiar with these, they were often issued in velvet lined boxes - this is usually to what the toning is attributed. This particular year's Maundy coins were issued in a mintage of 4,158 - and the strikes are very frosty. The diameter is 18mm of the 4 pence, so very comparable to a dime size (17.9mm). Now imagine that kind of toning on a Mercury dime?!

@ddddd : I have another soonish, but I need to take photos. Who's next?

This is a matched pair, from the same exact roll. Not my coins, but I know the story. They are end roll toned coins, from the same roll. One came from one end of the roll, and the other, from the other end. They are both NGC 1884o, MS 64*. The collector, who is my friend, bought them as a pair. They were sold as a pair, asking $3000 for both, about 4 years ago.

    Coin #1: 3.8
    Coin #2: 4.8

My difference is based solely on the disparity in vibrancy between the two coins. The both have similar pattern and color scheme, but the visual impact of Coin #2 is palpably better.

I'll update the summary after this round.

    For the Morgans:
    1. 3.9
    2. 4.4

I have the same view as @Lehigh96 that the second appears to be more vibrant...both appear to have average luster, which is why my scores were in the 3-4 range and not higher.

I am going to third that opinion. Great color and coverage put the luster seems to hold them back.

    1: 3.6
    2.3.8

    I'm a 3.8 on both. Lovely pair.

Both are equally attractive to my eyes, but end-roll toning is not as attractive as smoother transitions of color (in my opinion). YMMV.

    They are lovely coins.

I just don't personally care for end-roll toning. The "sudden" straight line toning transitions is more distracting to me than appealing. To each their own. ;)

Well, I guess I know nothing about toned coins, then. As I said, the coins are not mine, nor have they ever been mine, but obviously, I must have different eyes than everyone else. I must have wasted the past 25 years, collecting toned Morgans.

I wouldn't go that far. I had coin #2 at 4.8 and you had it at 5.0, that is pretty close. The only reason I had coin #1 a full point lower is because the vibrancy looks clearly less from the photos. In the video, the difference is harder to see and if I had an in hand look at these, coin #1 might vault into the fours (4.3), but I still think coin #2 should beat coin #1 by at least 0.5 points.

The coins I have been posting are, for the most part famous toned coins. A few of them, I have owned. Most of them are archetypes of the quintessential toned Morgans. Not saying that they are all monsters. Obviously, true monsters are comparatively rare. However, ratings in the 3 to low 4 range are simply misperceptions of what a true high end Morgan is, in my opinion. If someone sees a rich, multicolored high end Morgan as a 5, and the other a 3.5, one of the two is flat out wrong. Yes, subjective judgement is a part of this, but that is simply ridiculous. I am glad that I am out of that market now, as obviously, I am missing something. My bank account tells me otherwise, as I have done extremely well over the years buying low, and selling high on toned Morgans. However, I seem to be the odd man out. That is fine, as I have no vested financial interest in the aforementioned market anymore. Now, you see why I am concentrating on high end blazing coins now, as opposed to Morgan toned issues.

Agreed. My spread was also 0.5. The video is grainy but it does help. I could see bumping my scores-maybe 4.3 and 4.8. Then the second one comes close to the 5.0 @Morgandude11 gave but the first would fall short (closer to a 4 than a 5).

I like end-roll toners and the second one is quite nice. The scores so far just show that not everyone is as big a fan of this pattern.

Well Brandon stated that he punished his scores because he doesn't like the EOR patterns. Personally, I love them and think their rarity in relation to bag toning makes them more valuable. All I'm saying is that we aren't really that far apart on our evaluation of these two coins.
