This review will be devoted exclusively to the 2nd edition, 2007 reprint of Cornelus Vermeule's Classic book Numismatic Art In America. Numismatic Art In America Author:Cornelus Vermeule List Price:$29.99 overall rating:5/5 I find Numismatic Art In America to be one of the most attractive, useful, and underrated books on numismatics, of all time. It features in depth information about select coins, and historically significant medals, many of which are extraordinarily obscure. There are countless full color plates, illustrating the items in question. There are additionally numerous models in plaster that created the coins and medals. It provides a wealth of information through the text as well as rich illustrations. No detail is spared. the author captures the decades through commemoratives as well. He does not hesitate giving opinion in addition to fact, and extremely obscure information, which is extraordinarily difficult to find elsewhere. We find so much information about the most underappreciated art forms out there-coins. Also the lovingly bound hardcover edition makes for a long lasting book which is essential for an indespensible book such as this. I could scarcely imagine living without it. I highly reccomend it, and hope that all can see how essential it is for any serious collector. It is well worth at least the list price. It can be found at your local coin dealer or at major book stores nation wide. December 20th 2008
Isaiah, I really like your review of the book. I have found several copies at my local book store and have taken some time to read some pages. What I read, I would have to agree with you that the book is well worth the value. Unfortuantely, the copies in the bookstore were in bad shape and I won't pay full price for a damaged book. What I hope to do is purchase it when I buy Vol 1 of the Cherrypickers guide this week through Whitman or Amazon. Thanks for the review.
I just feel as though it's a book that most of us overlook, but it's certainly a great book. I chose to write this to spread the word.
Isaiah - Nice write up. I own this book too and found it very informative. I agree with you that what is compelling is that the author states his opinions strongly on the aesthetics of our coin designs. Agree or not, you'll know where he stands. By the way, did you know that the author dies recently? I saw that somewhere. Too bad, but I guess we all will some day!
No I had not heard that about the author. That's too bad. He lives on with his literature. P.S thanks for the nomination catbert, glad you liked my review.
Looks like he passed on Thanksgiving at 83. http://www.boston.com/news/educatio...or_jauntily_balanced_the_ancient_with_modern/
I agree, with the exception of a few modern commemoratives There has been no taste in the designs which have passed or portraits, sickly looking birds, and buildings.
