Okay @paddyman98 , I'm ready for you to "burst my bubble" . . . . . . . . . . Going through the bins getting ready to sell off a bunch of the generic silver dollars I started doing a bit of research on what the key dates were. When I got to the 1934-D Peace Dollars, I noted the die varieties and thought, meh, I just searched through HUNDREDS of Mercury dimes looking for the elusive 42/41 and 1945 micro S coins to no avail. My eyes were watering and blurry. My expectations were low, but then I found THIS . . . . . Looking at the last two rays in Liberty's tiara, I saw the signs. I think this coin is too worn to see the doubled forehead, nose, lips, lettering, or other features, but thank goodness for those rays . . . . . . . Here is what another 1934-D in my collection looks like. You can clearly see the last two rays are not doubled. And why is it that every time you find a "rarity" in your collection, it ends up being the most worn, beat up coin of the series . . . . . ? So @paddyman98 , should I put a down payment on the "mountain property" yet? Go ahead, burst my bubble . . . . . Z
Certainly looks to match one of the known Peace Dollar VAMs. That being said, I'm no expert on Peace Dollars and don't know which exactly. http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/1934-D_VAMs I doubt it will be worth too much in that condition. Again, I'm no expert on Peace Dollars. http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/1934-D_VAM-3
Oh, it's all there. I clearly see the thickness at the top of D, and all the doubling along the profile. VAM 3, beyond a shadow of a doubt. If it makes you feel any better, the one I found in my collection is in even worse shape than yours. Apparently, though, these just aren't that rare, even though it's a top 50 VAM. Even in low MS, it's only a multi-hundred-dollar coin. So, worth keeping, not worth slabbing, not a personal-finance windfall, alas.
Something important for you to know.. I am a Mint Error Specialists and not a Variety collector.. There is a difference. There are others who are way more knowledgeable about varieties such as DDO's, RPM's and other items in the Variety Category. There is a difference! https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/1655/Variety-versus-Mint-Error/ I'm not the best person to tag to ask about a Doubled Die.
It's just pretty exciting to actually FIND something like this. I'm very curious what grade y'all would attribute to it. I tend to undergrade, methinks. It's unfortunately also not the RAREST VAM-4 but the slightly rare VAM-3. Thanks for the links @furryfrog02 . Looks like this one is the 3 III 2 - B2b. http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/1934-D_VAM-3 Time for a partee . . . . . . Z
I'm still learning all this. And to be consistent with the rest of the noobs in the Error Coins forum, you just KNEW that I had to do a little arguing back, right? Z
