I'd ask him if the photo is stock or not just to see what he says. I agree with GD though, the coin pictured is quite beautiful.

I recieved this as a reply from aboncom when I asked about the coin and I got this reply back from Larry himself- "Yes the coin pictured is the one you will receive. Good luck. SMILES, also, are you interested in another potential 1913 liberty nickel? I found one, just tell me your email adress. thanks. SMILES".

Well thats cool. I honestly wouldn't trust anything he says, but thats based on my single and only experience with him. When I was new to numismatics, I made a purchase from him and got screwed way more than any of the stuff you've been purchasing. It really opened my eyes to the way he does business. It also accounts for the only negative on my ebay feedback.

In a way though, it really opened my eyes. The purchase I made from him is what led me to join cointalk and consult things with the experts and community here. So in part I am thankful.

There is a reason though why everyone here talks bad about him. I mean, I don't think less of you for buying from him; but just take what he says as a grain of salt. And anything selling for over $50, I would be very very wary.
I say that because he deals in counterfeits.

If you don't mind, may I ask what you purchased from him?

$3 gold. Yeah, ouch. It was one of those big mistakes you only make once.

you don't agree with the grade?

I wouldn't try grading a coin via photos when there might be a chance for it to get as high as 70. The differents between a 68/69/70 is so small that you would need it in hand.

Also, it would be hard for me to ever agree with a grade SGS gave out.

according to this year's red book the 1999 Dolley Madison Commemorative silver dollar is valued at $75. Therefore I feel I'm doing pretty good.

I wouldn't have much faith in that policy either. Remember the old saying "trust once gone is gone forever" and this guy lost that trust from most collectors long ago.

However, if that coin is the one you'll actually receive...it does look pretty nice. I have no idea how far a 70 is from it's actual grade because there is so little difference at grades this high.

As far as values, don't trust red book. If you look on Heritage you get a much better idea of the current going prices. In their history archives, slabbed PF70s are selling for around $100-$150 for NGC and a little higher for PCGS. PF69s are selling for somewhere between $40 and $60. This is a much better source for the current going rate.

Unless this coin has been damaged (which it looks fine in the pics), it's probably around a 69...maybe a 68 at the lowest. So, if you get it for the current bid I think you'll be doing fine. Don't go any higher.

Yeah, Heritage is a better place to find values than the Redbook.

I don't plan on going higher, but I hope I win. The Dolley Madison dollars are beautiful.

Glad you have one of those. If you can go to Montpelier, you should. It has just been restored to its original state using the most modern techniques. I think this is a great commem. and pairs nicely with the J. Madison commem also, but Dolley's is nicer! These are readily available, and personally I would have qualms about supporting someone who in my opinion makes a living ripping off newbies. But, hey, it's your money, and that's just my opinion.

I'm 99.99% sure it's a real 1883 nickel underneath the plating. However, the company which sold this item states it "is plated in pure 24 Karat Gold." To me, that clearly indicates that they were plated by or for the seller. A Racketeer Nickel with provenance would be worth a lot more than $35.

My CT Secret Santa sent me a racketeer nickel two years ago. I have no idea when the plating was done. But it’s still cool.
