what are these please

    I found these going through the junk box at a local coin dealer. and thought they where cool. so i parted with the 1 quarter each for them and bought them. lol did i pay to much.

    these are called Swizerland coins rappens they are 20 rappens i have a few myself .

    You did alright Jon....they are worth $0.50 in VF and a $1 in XF.
    So you cherrypicked the dealer somewhat.

    These are 20 Rappen from Switzerland, KM #29.
    Nickel made and the "B" mintmark is from Bern.

    Minted from 1881 to 1938 and retired legal tender status in January 1, 2004 and removed from circulation.

    By the way, "Rappen" is the German term for that currency unit; in French it's centimes, etc. That is why they use digits only.

    In case anybody wonders why "such pieces" can still be found in circulation: These pure nickel 20 rp/ct coins were replaced by Cu-Ni coins (1939-today) - same design, different alloy. Only the pure nickel pieces were taken out of circulation and can, since 1-Jan-2007, not be redeemed any more.
