How many CT people also collect rocks? I don’t necessarily mean diamonds but just pretty rocks.

I travel a lot and like to bring back rocks & coins. This summer during an Argentina trip I purchased these coins and this rock in Buenos Aires. The rock is called Rhodochrosite. I believe it is the national rock of Argentina. The coins are off center 10 Pesos, off center 5 pesos, blank planchet for 10 pesos, and a 10 centavos with 180-degree rotated die. I enjoy them & hope you do too.

    Very best regards,

Very nice. Rocks and coins both, that is.

I don't collect rock, per se, but I do appreciate their beauty, and I might pick one up from time to time. I have accumulated some cut amethyst gemstones, but that's a different type of animal.

Nice! Thanks for sharing! I collect coins and rocks as well. My rocks out-weigh my coins but I wish that it was the other way around! I probably have 600 pounds of rocks in my basement and another 100 pounds or more stashed here and there elsewhere around the house, while my coins probably go a little over 100 pounds. I wish that when I was out Gold and/or Gem Prospecting that I had time to check out some local Coin Shops, Flea Markets and Antique Shops but I don't. When I Gold and/or Gem Prospect, I am only focused on that and I am hard at it from the time that I get to a site until I leave.

Yep - I have a few rocks, nothing as nice as that though. A few fossils also - but no collecting.

    Hello Frank,
I personally have never prospected for gold. I have prospected for Herkimer diamonds in NY and for real diamonds & quartz in Arkansas. This is in addition to just rock hounding everywhere I go. Post a picture of a rock! This photo is of Malachite which I purchased at a rock show.
    Very best regards,

P.S. Better yet- post a picture of some gold you have found.

Wowzor, I like that malachite. Prices go up high when malachite comes in nice size and yours is definately awesome.

Funny enough, that' s what I studied in my undergrad - rocks. Was planning to be a geologist but now with the total market collapse, I'm not too sure what to do. I think I have a bunch of rocks and fossils that I collect from a few field trips. I'm sure anthrathice (sorry, can never remember how to spell) has interesting rocks to show as that's his profession. :)

I collect a few rocks here and there, mostly at work. We travel through some nice agate and jasper fields, so I'll look around and pick up some nice pieces. The blood red jasper I usually sell at the annual gem and mineral show, the agate I keep. My wife collects gemstones.

Please post pictures of your coins, rocks, & fossils. This is quartz on Pyrite I think.

    Hello Sketcherpbr,
You should have posted a photo of your prehistoric shark teeth. My brother in-law in Venice Florida was collecting prehistoric teeth many years ago. He tells me that they are difficult to find today.

Well I thought I was a collecter, but after seeing what others have I'll have to reconsider it.

I don't suppose any of you could help me figure if this is what I think it is? I don't really want to use a streak plate or try any of the hardness tests, so....what are your thoughts on this one??

btw I don't think it's muscovite or biotite, cause it's actually GOLD in color. in my experience, muscovite and biotite are black/brown/red and white/opaque.

Those shark teeth were cool and while I can't help with the last, it certainly looks interesting.

It looks like muscovite to me, possibility of phlogopite. The color is typical of that mica.

awwww, dang. you're probably right. i'm just now getting into the 300 levels in geo, so my experience with rocks has just been identifying basic minerals, seds, metamorphics, and igneous rocks. should have known it was just a variation...

    Hello sketcherpbr,
    #1
It looks like it contains Mica. I found similar looking rocks when I lived at Lake Tahoe California. Where is your rock from?
    #2
Where did you get all the shark teeth?
    Very best regards,

Yes, those are singly terminated quartz crystals on pyrite. There are other sulfides there as well, galena, possibly some sphalerite.
