No. I don't think the Racketeer Nickel scam worked very well in 1905.

I meant do you think that within a few months a liberty nickel could circulate to this extent, when the scam was going on, for example the guy who created them found it in change like this and then plated it in 1883?

The wear your coin has is from YEARS and YEARS of circulation - not a few months.

No, it takes years for a coin to circulate to that extent. Isaiah, your coin was plated a lot more recently than 1883.

Exactly. As bad as they are about scamming people, they pretty much admitted this is NOT an AUTHENTIC rackateers nickel.

I'm actually pretty proud of SGS right now. Perhaps they do have just the slightest thread of decency. :rolling:

Actually it was rather deceptive phraseology, it didn't come out and say it was not original, in fact it called it "original", "authentic" and "a piece of history'.

Well, it is an original and authentic gold plated 1883 Liberty Head nickel just like they said...all that means is it is an original 1883 nickel with gold plate. They never said in their ad at all that it was one of the nickels that was plated in 1883 and passed off as gold. The say it has "the same gold plate" as those coins. They may not being saying it is a modern plate outright...but they aren't saying it's a contemporary plate either. For them, that's a big step IMHO.

Well now you have one. But $33 would buy a lot of pig's feet! lol
I saw something interesting at the coin show last Sunday. There were two gold plated V nickels but the dates were not 1883 no cents. They were something like 1902 and 1905 and the gold plating was done nicely.
But they also were just AG/G grades. The dealer only wanted $1 each but I passed. Why would anyone gold plate them?

You've really got to pay more attention to the fine print man.

I have one of those supposed Racketeer Nickels and I got mine at a much more reasonable price: $0.00. X-MAS gift. Look how bad this is!

I find $33 for a nice SGS coin very reasonable.
