I'm so happy with my historical purchase! I've always desired to own one. What do you think?

I have always wanted a plated 1883 nickel too. That one appears to be a modern plating which is fine in my book. However, I would not have bought that coin. I don't have any desire to support SGS or their terrible business practices in any way. So, I wouldn't buy one of their coins.

I just looked up SGS's racketeer nickel as it looks like another is on eBay right now. It says:
To me, that says it is plated in gold just like they were 123 years ago. So, they aren't even hiding the fact that it's a modern plating. Personally, I think it would be cool to have a plated 1883...modern or not (although a contemporary plating would be MUCH cooler).

    Isaiah,

I've seen many other posts by you when your bashing SGS....quite deservedly as they are nothing but scammers. With that said, I'm confused with your purchase here. Are you just kidding? In addition to this coin probably not having original plating, the "MS-60" grade is a joke. There isn't even a full liberty, which would put the coin in the VG range. Still, if you got the coin dirt cheap, you probably did ok.

buy the coin not the slab. If you are happy with what you recieved and paid what you feel is a fair price, don't worry about what anyone else has to say.

    Oh wow!

Did you know that I have the EXACT SAME brand of car that the President of the United States has? Yep, EXACT SAME Make!

And of course my wristwatch tells time using the exact same technology as the one that Brad Pitt wears!

FWIW, with Racketeer nickels, genuinely plated ones fall into one of two categories..

    1) Sharply struck Unc details coins with the plating still on them. These are rare. I remember once being told that there was a way to tell if they were contemporary plated coins. How I have no idea.

    2) Worn ones with hints of gold plating buried in the design, these are uncommon but I have seen them. I probably have one or two in the hoard of Liberty Nickels from hotel echo double hockey sticks.

I generally agree with this, however in this case I don't. SGS has such unethical business practices it is my opinion that all knowledgeable collectors should refuse to buy from them.

That applies to most any of the self-slabbers from what I have seen.

I agree. But I feel that SGS is the most widely marketed self slabber due to their relentless use of eBay. They certainly aren't the only one.

    What do you think

I think that you should carry the coin in your pocket. From time to time, tell someone that you are "Joshing them" about something. Ask if they know where the term "Josh" originated & tell them the story of Josh Tatem & the 1883 Racketeer Nickel. They will be entertained & they will learn what it means to Josh.

I tell the story from time to time but I never have a sample Racketeer Nickel in my pocket to show.

    Very best regards,

considering how much Isaiah has bashed SGS (like we all have), I doubt he really purchased it.
