Just won this lifetime portrait of one of my (Everybody's) favorite generals, Gnaeus Pompeius: Better known as Pompey the great! SNG Levante 880-2 (same). Dark patina. Very fine. With any image of Pompey you have to ask, "How on points his hair??" In my, for the price of a coke, fries and a burger, example, I gotta say, pretty on point! Much obliged! Julius Caesar was said to be the first living Roman whoms vanity superceded the respect for his, mos maiorum, respect for those who came before. And he was the first Roman to have his portrait portrayed on coin while he was still alive... in Rome. Across Roman republic history lifetime portraits appear on coins of Scipio Africanus, Pomps, among others... but always in the provinces.

Admittedly, I wish it were one of the coins from Rome he minted. But bargain buyers can't be too choosy. When I came across it and saw what some in similar condition had sold for at the big auction houses, CNG, I thought for sure I would be blown out of the water.
