Looks to be either a real or replica anchient coin. Was it in a machine wraped roll or customer wraped.
It's a Roman Republican coin, BC type featuring the Dioscuri. I'll report this post and ask it be sent to Ancients Forum. Maybe cast replica...
Now it's on the Ancients Forum you should get some answers. I hope it is real, it is a nice looking coin.
Mine: ROMAN REPUBLIC - AR Denarius approx 190 BCE Roman Republic Anonymous Issue 190 BCE AR Denarius 20.9mm 3.7g Rome Mint Obv: Head of Roma right, X mark of value (10 Asses) Rev: Dioscuri riding holding spears, stars above heads, ROMA in tablet Ref: Crawford 53-2 I lost another one when I was rolling a bunch of US Cents. Can I have it back?
That's a pretty hilarious (and awesome) find for a US coin roll! Machine wrapped... meaning by the bank? How would a silver coin make it through the sorting and preliminaries to even be wrapped? Forgive me, but that sounds like a fishy story. On the other hand, it sounds like something many of my fellow ancient collectors on CT would do if they worked at a bank or had a coin wrapping machine-- stick a ancient in there just to mess with someone! I'd be more likely to put a late Roman bronze in there rather than a more valuable and older silver coin. Well, if it was in a US cent roll it's probably ~19 mm. While it's generally not possible to say with certainty that a coin is authentic based solely on photos, the coin looks legitimate to me and the size and weight are okay. As others have already stated, it's an ancient coin from the Roman republic, circa ~200 BCE.
@Alegandron: Lol! I believe I seen those in an older thread. I can label this as a Crawford 53-2? Thanks for the info.
The odds of this happening, in a machine wrapped roll, are really slim to none. I heard of one story where someone found a $2.50 gold piece in a penny roll, but that was customer wrapped. Occam’s razor - it’s simply too improbable for this to happen.
I've picked up over 60 silver quarters in one day here. Nothing as old as this. Don't know who would let a pice like this go.
In 1967, I found this in my Grandmother’s coffee can of change ( the coins she pulled out of her purse each nite.) It is my first coin to start me collecting. US Civil War Token AE Cent CE 1863 Eagle - Carpeles Dry Goods Groceries Waterloo Wis Coin no 1
Incredible find, even if somebody planted it there! I know that some on the ancients forum like to occasionally slip $1-5 late Roman coins into penny rolls, but that is pretty easily a $30-50 coin! I searched through a couple hundred boxes of nickels back in my roll hunting days; oldest I ever found "in the wild" was a slick 1891 V nickel. I wonder what is the oldest coin anyone has ever found wrapped up in a roll?
GREAT PHOTOGRAPHY! For someone that doesn't collect ancient coins you sure shoot them well. I don't and I've been practicing for years. Coin looks legit and for sale to me. 49.99
I think it was a 1953 quarter for me. The only possible way this ended up in a roll was if jt was planted. Remember the story of a saint gaudens double eagle ending up in a salvation army collection bucket?
