    Just make sure you use pure acetone from the hardware store not nail polish remover that has other additives

    Seconded.

    Also, don't forget to use a covered container, as acetone evaporates very quickly. If you need to use something with a plastic lid, look for polypropylene (recycling code 5); polyethylene (4) and polystyrene (6) don't like acetone, or more accurately, acetone likes them too much.
    Not exactly. It dissolves different stuff. If you've got plastic or tape on a coin, you could let it sit in water forever with no effect, but acetone will take it right off. But if you've got sticky sugary stuff, water will take it off and acetone won't.

    I will probably use a 1/4 pint mason jar.

    I am new at this and use the Acetone a lot. The best suggestion is to use a sealed container to eliminate evaporation and breathing fumes. Good find and good luck.
