I googled " Olivier De Serres", he was an argricutural soil scientist from France. This medallion is heavy and non magnetic. I'm thinking its copper. Its about a quarter inch thick. Just exactly who made this and where it came from, I don't know. I think my dad got it in germany in the 1950's when he was in the US Army.

Can't read the letters at the bottom of the obverse.
That could be who made it.

My pleasure. Thanks for posting it. My heritage is French. My father and I do a lot of genealogy work up in Upstate NY on our family history all the way back to to 1600's from France so it's nice to see a cool French piece like that. Thanks again for sharing.

The wording on the obverse "Comice Agricole de Vervins" -Aisne- translates to "Agricultural Show" in Vervins (city) - Aisne (department, equivalent to a state). Aisne is in the northeast of France and was formerly part of the Champaigne region.

The medal is bronze and is for a third prize at the show. There is also a silver medal, and I suppose maybe a gold one too. I think it may be from 1850 although there have been other shows there in other years.
