I've heard some people say that their new state quarters proof sets are already toning. Do you guys think it's a bad idea to leave mint proof sets in their respective boxes with the paperwork for long term storage? Currently, I've left my state quarter sets in their boxes. Do you think chemicals from the boxes could be causing the toning? Would it be better to store them out of their boxes?
interested in others experience I would suspect that leaving modern sets in their original hard plastic holders would be fine. I'm interested in hearing what other CT people have to say. In the mid 80's I heard a story about the mint employees stuffing the proof coins into holders. This is a hear-say story. They supposedly had gloves on to protect the coins. They were also eating potato chips out of a bag wearing the same gloves. Let me know if anyone can confirm this old urban gossip. Very best regards, collect89
Modern Proof sets, if removed from the cardboard boxes but left in their cases, and then stored properly will be fine.
I wasn't going to take them out of their plastic mint holders. I actually like the holders, but they're not air tight. I'm more concerned with the idea of leaving the plastic holders in the cardboard boxes that they come in. Since I've heard that paper and cardboard isn't good for long term storage. I have several intercept shield products. Do they make a box that holds mint set plastic holders?
Ok, I'm glad I asked this. I've thought about it but hadn't done anything yet. I'll store the boxes and paperwork elsewhere now.
Mine are all still in the OGPs and not one of them has toned yet. It is a product of their environment whether or not they tone.
not 100%. paper decomposes and gives out acid fumes that alters othe rpaper and metals. thats why you see that yellowing. there are four composites to alteration. acid, sunlight, moisture
I sure wouldn't risk it. But what I.S. product is it that is large enough to hold the boxes and all ? I am not aware of one. And Vess, there is no coin holder that is airtight. None of them are really much better than the plastic cases used by the mint.
I call the shoe box. IS calls it the mint box or something all 10 years fit into that box with or without the carboard box packaging. i have not seen any toning in the last 4 years but that is not by any means a large amount of time plus there are other factors as well no sunlight, dehumidifer etc but still .... IS also makes products for keeping your letters and paper products safe and itsa smiliar technology except for the sacrificial metal so i was wondering ....
What about vacuum tite plastic bags to hold the plastic proof boxes.? As long as they're not PVC. I've got to call some manufacturers. Took your advice and removed my sets from their boxes. But now where to store the plastic holders. In my closet maybe. Thanks ---=- zg
as mentioned earlier keep you coins away from heat sunlight humidity moisture water pollution any acid contaminants now you decide where to place them after looking at your environment also get some intercept shield boxes.
away from outside walls & attic Of course, you don't want to publicize where you store your coins. I personally like the security of a bank vault. In your home, keep the collection away from outside walls & out of the attic. These locations often have larger temperature swings. Very best regards, collect89
Now there is a great helpful suggestion. Maybe you can help me design one just like yours, that would be awfully sweet of youKiss.-----=zg
