Dear everybody, I'm new to collecting. I have done some researches online. Some people say the fanciest serial number is low serial number 1 while others think it should be solid number like 88888888. What do you think? Who is the king of serial numbers if they are in the same condition?

Though I don't think there is one particular "king of serial numbers," because it depends a little bit on who your audience is, I can say that when I look at "fancy serial number" sections on banknote sites, the most expensive examples always seem to be the lowest of the low serial numbers. A "00000001" serial number seems to almost always be worth more than its weight in rhodium.

For example, a site that I won't mention right now has a serial number "00000001" 1995 $1 bill certified in Very Fine 25 condition for almost $2,000. The bill is folded strongly both horizontally and vertically and looks like someone might have even sat on it folded for a while. It's not pretty. Regardless, it's still selling for almost $2,000.

But, that same site also has a 2009 $2 with serial number "11111111" selling for $5,000 in Extremely Fine 40. I'm not sure if the condition or the serial number is the major factor in the pricing difference.

Most of the other fancy serial numbers from similar date ranges seem to fall around $100 or less.

What about solid 8's? As we know, modern currency is not printed to its full capacity. So the highest solid would be 88888888 that is seen as the most auspicious number in Asian societies. Some rich people are willing to pay a big money for it.

Like lithographed paintings, the lower number in a series is the most desirable since it is the first impression. However, in printing money, the serial numbers are printed in reverse order so the 00000001 serial number is actually the last note printed. Can it be as good a copy as the first impression? Do the plates deteriorate (even ever so slightly) as they are used?

Asking price and selling price are different. They can ask for whatever they want. My friend is asking $250,000.00 for an 1,100sq ft row house. It'll probably sell for $170,000.00.

Do you agree with that serial number 1 is more valuable than solid 8’s?

I don’t own either, but if given the choice of the two at the same price, I would choose the serial #1 note. My closet to a solid. This the lower corner note on an 8-subject Lucky Money sheet.
