A little Saturday night indulgence for me - a favorite lettering exemplar: RIC Vol I, Claudius, As, Rome, No. 106 Obverse depiction: Germanicus, bare headed facing right Inscription clockwise from bottom: GERMANICVS CAESAR TI AVG F DIVI AVG N Reverse depiction: large S. C. Inscription clockwise from top: TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG GERM P M TR P IMP PP
Not much going on here lately. The prices of coins have been putting me off... so nothing great that's new. I have bought some snacks. While this is not the nicest of the snacks, it may pose a fun question. Why did I spend $20 on this rough fallen horseman when you could easily find one in similar shape for a few dollars?
That's a great accomplishment @Clavdivs! And the portrait of your Vitellius is mighty fine, nothing wrong with adding that coin to your collection. I spent my saturday night re-watching FC Barcelone getting humiliated by Der Rekordmeister. In case any one cares, it concerns football and for many football enthousiasts that game marks the end of an era in so many ways. I'm still shocked and really need some time to process this! Luckily there's the stability of coining that can pull me out of this pitt of uncertainty and disbelief. Here's a new addition, that required some cleaning due to serious hornsilver. With the help of @Roerbakmix, I believe it turned out very nice. Before: After: It took 1 month of soaking, picking, brushing and chemical cleaning, to get to this point. I took it very easy, and slowly, so not to overclean it, or damage the coin otherwise. Some spots remain, but I can surely live with that. It actually accentuates the devices. This coin replaces the one below, which appeared to be a fake, unfortunately. (Some did not agree with that conclusion, however )
Oh I am so sorry @Limes - that was quite embarrassing in the end .. and that club never deserves to be humiliated that way. They define football... However as a Liverpool supporter I will never forget this night.. if you ever doubt the joy of football - you must watch the night Liverpool had to score 4 against the mighty Barcelona.. reactions are fantastic! Even if you are not a football/soccer supporter - the pure joy in this clip puts a smile on your face .. please watch. and of course we won the final...
Well @Clavdivs, to be honest, Barcelona had it coming. I mean, their policy has been horrible the last years, leading to the situation that what defines this club has completely disappeared. Sometimes disaster has to strike, to get things changed. A new president would be one necessary change, I think! I saw the match between Liverpool - Barcelona, it was an amazing and crazy game!! It's great that Liverpool is finally back on track the last two years, after an era without any signficant accomplishments. And that they're able to break the dominance of Man City in the PL. Before this turns into a football forum, here's something I've been working on for quite while. It's simply trying to take good photo's a coin of Tiberius. In hand it's a great looking coin. But the surfaces are a little bad: scratches, and a bit too shiny. My camera can't handle all that, so the photo's are horrible. New attempts led to the photo's below, which are a bit more like the coin looks in hand. Still, the coin looks dull in the photo's, the lettering appears as if almost non-existent, and the color is a too light. Oh well.. I will try another day.
I understand... yes a change from top to bottom is required. But they have the resources for a quick turnaround if they get it right. Very nice and important coin you have there.. photography is also a problem for me.
Another Saturday night. I've been photographing new arrivals ... Waiting for auction wins to arrive ... and reading ...
One of my favorite DIVVS AVGVSTVS coins: BMCRE Vol. I, Rome, Caligula, No. 88, Dupondius, 40-41 AD RIC, Vol I, Rome, Caligula, No. 56, Dupondius, 40-41 AD Obverse depiction: head of Augustus, radiate, facing left Inscription: DIVVS AVGVSTVS in arc above, S C left and right (unusual on obverse). Reverse depiction: Augustus, laureate and togate, seated on curule chair, holding olive branch in right hand. Inscription: from lower left, CONSENSV SENAT ET EQ ORDIN PQR Some unusual legend lettering there I don’t recall seeing many of these coins shown here on CT. Please post any pics of this coin issue you have.
With Covid I spend sometimes looking over coins that I otherwise basically ignore. This is one Sid Ar Stater or double siglos 360-330 B.C. Obv Athena standing left Rv. Apollo standing left SNG France 637 10.62 grms 20 mm Photo by W. Hansen
I bought one of those a few years ago, because I liked the idea of a pomegranate on a coin and Nike was nicely engraved. I hadn't thought about it for a long time until I saw your pic. ATB, Aidan.
A Saturday night alone with my CT friends. The wife's gone for a girl's night out. A special meal for me : Pork and beans. Reminds me my only coin featuring a pig ; Uncertain mint (Pontus), uncertain ruler, two figures sacrificing a pig. And a song I adore from one of my favorite group Weezer :
Saturday night with a couple of new Greek Æs. As with the bulk of my collection, these are both cheapies from eBay ($4 and $8). In these photos I left the morning shadows in because it sort of indicates how chunky they are. The horse on this one from Kyme is just lovely, I think: Aeolis, Kyme Æ 20 (c. 250-190 B.C.) Magistrate Aristophanes Head of Amazon Kyme wearing taenia right / KY [A]PIΣΤΟΦΑΝΗΣ, horse standing right, monogram beneath raised fore-leg. Cf. BMC 59 (monogram);SNG Cop. 93; SNG Mün. 486. (9.12 grams / 20 mm) Glossy dark patina with a scattering of ancient pits - I have worse! The colors are more matched than my photos show. Macedon Æ 16 Alexander III (c. 336-323 B.C.) Macedonian Mint (Pella?) Head of Herakles right, with lionskin head-dress /AΛEΞANΔΡO[Y], between club above & bow and bowcase below; no symbols. Price 266; Müller-; SNG Cop.- (6.33 grams / 16 mm)
Wow, that pomegranate looks like a persimmon to me! Had great persimmon pudding and persimmon rolls growing up!
MANUEL I AE half Tetarteron S-1978 DOC 24 Brockage XC Rev Manuel , bearded stg. facing wearing crown and military attire , and holding cruciform sceptre and gl. cr. Thessalonica mint , 17mm A really nice brockage, it has a nice fill on the brockage side giving it additional eye appeal.
I've been sitting on this coin for the past few weeks without posting it here cuz I was hoping to do some sort of thread, but Fortuna hasn't been shining on me in that aspect . So this is as good of a time as any to make a debutante's debut (fitting wording for Elagabalus?) to the CT world. Speaking of Fortuna, I picked myself up a Nerva sestertius (the price was very right) that had some corrosion on the reverse and a weak strike on right off the obverse. But I did some cleaning work on it and got it to come through with a few more details. Before: After:
LOL, yeah, a bit exotic for the States, too. The only folks that would eat Persimmons seem to be folks in North Carolina and Indiana. They are mostly thrown to the pigs. I miss Persimmon Pudding, but nobody wants to make it anymore... takes three hours to bake in an oven, and you have to stir it every 15 minutes... lotta labor! It does not look like them, but this coin always reminded me of rhubarb: KYRENAICA Kyrene Æ25 9.6g 250 BCE Diademed Zeus-Ammon r - K-O-I-N-O-N; Silphium plant; monogram SNG Cop 1278 BMC 16-19
