I am on a 'stay-cation" next week and plan to spend a little time in the sun with this new arrival:

Actually I have already done a selective “speed read” and I rate it to be excellent. Lots of coin photos too.

Adrian Goldsworthy is one my favorite authors.

This has become my favorite of all books/references relating to Julius Caesar - all 578 pages!

I have it at my feet under my desk. I may read it again, but I have several books en route from Amazon, and already have a few dozen books under my desk to read.

@DonnaML suggested I read (read it when I was a kid, but do not remember it well..)

Blue is wondering why she suggested I read this...

    AbsolUTELY!

Blue is my Buddy. She is always by my side, goes with me whenever she is able. I wish I were living back in Europe. Many of the local Pubs and Brauhaus never had a problem with a dog at your side. :)

I recently read Ghost on the Throne, great book about the death of Alexander the Great and the cast of characters fighting over his Empire (Antigonous the One-eyed, Perdiccas, Antipater, Ptolemy, Kassander, etc)....really enjoyed it, highly recommend.

Justin Lee I learn by doing

I had gotten a free Audible download from work back in April that just this past week exchanged for The Ghosts of Cannae.

And I picked up another cheap one there too, The Darkness out of Carthage.

Julian by Gore Vidal. It's very good; almost finished. I'm on a reading and collecting run of the latter Roman Empire. While I do have the signature coin of Julian I don't have anything exotic like the aureus pictured on the book's cover. My bronze nummis {i.e. follis} of Julian below. I got the coin about 1 year before the book.

Actually what I'd like is a detailed history of the reign of Honorius. Granted he didn't do much himself but he ruled so long and the Empire was falling apart during his reign (394 - 423 AD). I wonder if there was a more energetic emperor in charge during that time if Rome's fall could've been averted?

@Justin Lee , The Ghosts of Cannae is a great read, you should like it. A lot of interesting info and stories about Hannibal and Scipio Africanus.

Finally getting around to reading this one. Picked it up when I visited in January before COVID. Also including a photo of the wonderful cathedral that is part of the complex.

Here are a few pages to whet your appetite! These are from the "Byzantine" volume. As you can see the quality is fantastic.
