I suspected it was altered. I wanted to be certain though, I have an eye for good deals on rare coins. Don't worry though, I didn't bid.

yes I was serious, but I won't buy it now. The guy selling it had no knowlegde of numismatics. He said in the item description- "1914-D Lincoln wheat cent *VF* (counterfeit?)" I just wanted to be sure. Thanks everyone so much for the help. I hope we all report it. (I have).

I would surmise that you didnt take a look at the rest of his offerings on ebay? He has plenty of numismatic knowledge, take note of all of the unsearched rolls of Cents he has listed. He knows that coin has been altered. He also knows that the rolls he is selling have indeed been searched, well maybe not in the last couple of hours perhaps. This coin the "1914D" is so obvious its not even questionable. Buy the books young man. One day you will look back and thank everyone that has suggested that to you.

Now, let's hope whoever buys it flattens it out, cuts it in half, or scribes 'fake' on it.Otherwise, It will probably wind up, eventually, being bought for serious money by someone with no knowldege, and continue to circulate in the numismatic pool.

It might continue to be sold to completely clueless collectors but any collector with even the most rudimentary knowledge of fake coins should be able to spot this altered coin in a second. This is one of the most commonly altered coins and is easy to spot - if you know what to look for.

Rather than destroy this piece it may serve a better purpose in some collector's collection to be used as an educational piece. (That's what I would use it for if I owned it.)

Huh... take a corroded 44d (worth 2c), scrape part of the date off, throw it on eBay, say "Gee it looks fake ot me" to CYA and get $10+ for it.

    Nice....

I asked for help, not insults.

That was very good advice, not an insult. It's just another version of "Buy the book before the coin".

You should be receptive to good advice like this. Reactions like this will make members here reluctant to help you in the future.

amazing. technically he is admitting that it is probably an altered date so he's not really selling it as real, but why should he even need to speculate? there is no question about it. It's already at $10. I should go through my 44-ds and start scratching on them to make some money!!!

    (jk by the way).

he's not certain of the authenticity. that is against one rule. it also violates ebays replica policy where all fakes have to be stamped copy.

What i cannot understand is even with the word Counterfeit? in the heading, and with the discussion in the text, underlined even, that this is an altered 44, three people still bid on it and it is going for $10. I know many people buy coins without a lot of knowledge and get taken, but to be told you are being taken, but bid anyway?? Amazing.

In this case the coin is a genuine coin that has been altered. It is definitely not a "copy".

I know. But it's still against ebays policies.

I'll report it , but maybe someones bidding on it knowing it's altered but wants it for educational reasons .

If it stays at a reasonable price, I don't think anyone should report it. When it starts to creep into the hundreds, that is when I would report it. This is a coin I would consider bidding on to keep for educational purposes.

Isaiah, I can see why you took the post as insulting. When I read it, my first reaction was that is a pretty harsh comment. I am certain that the person making the post did not mean it as an insult, but as good advice. However, that is not how it read.

    Just my opinion, folks.
