Peacocks are a common motif on consecration issues for Roman empresses. This is one of the scarcer coins issued for the deified Faustina II.

Faustina Jr CONSECRATIO Peacock facing denarius.jpg Diva Faustina II, AD 147-175.
    Roman AR denarius, 2.73 g, 17.1 mm, 12 h.
    Rome, AD 176-180.
Obv: DIVA FAVSTINA PIA, bust of Faustina II, draped, right.
Rev: CONSECRATIO, peacock standing facing with tail spread, head right.
    Refs: RIC 743; BMCRE 712-13; Cohen/RSC 70; RCV --; CRE 200.

Post anything you feel is relevant!

I’ve always wanted to contribute to this thread with a coin but I never can since I own no Faustina coins :( So I figured I’d share a story of fellow coin collectors saving me from ruin! Recently this coin popped up for sale for $675. I’ve been saving up some monies as I’ve wanted a Faustina for quite some time and this one is a real looker! Fortunately I asked for advice before buying, and was told in no uncertain terms just how much I’d be overpaying!! :nailbiting: Disaster averted. My hunt for a Faustina continues!

FaustinaIIConsecratio.jpg Diva Faustina Senior with a differently styled peacock on reverse - walking right, head left and looking upright. Now I noted that there are actually many minor variations in how the peacock is rendered for both Faustinas.

Keep looking. A lovely Faustina is a joy to behold. Since I only collect Bronze in Roman, here are a few of my heavier Faustinas: Fau1 at 36.3gm, Fau2 at 34.7gm, and Fau2 at 49.2gm. 17AW---Faustina2 34'7.jpg 17AW---Faustina2 34'7.jpg 17AW---Faustina2 Med 49'2.jpg

The difference between Faustina I and II is that F.I wears the knot on top of her head, F.II has no knot or one in her neck.

Nice catch @Roman Collector. The peacock is rendered quite nicely! I'm ashamed to say that I only have one empress in my collection, and that's Iulia Domna...

Here's a Faustina Junior sestertius, recently arrived as part of a $49 three coin lot. This sestertius has the Juno reverse.

This coin has a nice obverse. There's a chip in the patina at 12 o'clock on the reverse. Overall the surfaces are somewhat rough, with an even shade of dark brown.

    20.6 grams
