I'm having trouble with this really nice coin from @tenbobbit. Obv: Bare head right. Bearded. AV---VIIIOC Rev: Deity standing left holding patera(?). Greek lettering Diam: 19mm The style of the beard seems to point towards either Ant Pi or Marcus Aurelius, but I can't find any coins on woodwinds for either of these with "VIII" on the obverse, that legend part is always on the reverse. Plus I think the reverse is Greek, so I'm lost.
Looks like Septimius Severus, Markianopolis. Septimius Severus Æ28 of Marcianopolis, Moesia Inferior. AD 193-211. Flavius Ulpianus, consular legate. AV K Λ CEΠT CEVHPOC, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / Y + Λ OYΛΠIANOY MAPKIANOΠOΛITΩN, Homonia standing left, holding patera and cornucopiae. Varbanov 844/845 var. (obv. legend). 11.22g, 28mm, 1h. Very Fine. Pleasing patina. Ex Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. Auction 401, 3 November 2010, lot 587. (Not exactly a match, but you get the point)
The VIII on the obverse might be like the CEYHPOC on the right of the bust here (Septimus Severus): https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/septimius_severus/_amphipolis_AK_L57.jpg
You got it! Thanks, I was really confused that a VIII would be on an obverse. Makes sense that it's NOT VIII.
