1943-S Jefferson Nickel: PMD or Strike Error?

    I really have no idea what is going on at the top of the reverse of this war nickel.

    Just weakness in the strike. Could be caused by a tilted die.

    Maybe tilted die. Perhaps slightly tapered planchet?

    No, why? Weights are typically used for authentication purposes, and I don’t think that is an issue here.

    I believe weight is a good indicator of tapered planchet errors, but I am not an expert in rolling errors.

    Ahh. I think I own a good, inexpensive one if you are curious. You might get good use out of it. How sensitive of a scale do you have?

    I have one for weighing mail, readout is in ounces

    I see. That probably won't do the job. I will try to see what my scale is, it might be $15-$20 on Amazon. There might be other ways to tell a tapered planchet, though.

    It may help in determining a planchet defect from a striking defect.
