I have about 20, 79 sba all in looks to be almost un circulated condition. They look like they they may have just come out of circulation or maybe not.
I just remembered it incorrectly...Ruben's article explains it. Actually, just by looking at the mintage numbers I can see I was mistaken. They minted over 29 million in Philadelphia and over 11 million in Denver...far to many for a collector only issue. However, they did release them in a special "mint set" package where you got one from each mint. The weird thing is...I worked at a bank for over a year and saw SBAs basically everyday...and I don't ever remember seeing a 1999. It's obvious to me now they were a circulation issue, but strangely I never saw one (at least that I can remember).
The mint also sold the 1999 SBA's in bags of 25 (not rolls for some odd reason). I have a bag from each mint. They did a two-coin 'mint set' of P and D in pliofilm and the only Philadelphia minted regular issue proof coin since 1964 sold as a single coin. Great trivia! 1999 was a strange year indeed!!
I bought the $25 bags back in 99 as well. Many that posted online at the time reported that it was best not to open the bags because of the quality of the coins inside. I'm thinking the proof could be bought in a small display box. I'm not on top of varieties on these. Wonder if there is a good book out? Folks didn't care for this coin from the start. That may just bring some strong prices in the future.
I see this with the old 1963 Topps no name base ball cards. They are going for like $20 to $50 in excellent collection. I love the Susans.
I'm thinking there should be some kind of premium for the 1999 SBA's since they were never issued in the regular mint or proof sets for the year. They slipped under the radar for most folks. I've seen some of the scammers on TV sell the proof coin for anywhere from $40-$69 but a recent check of e-bay found no 1999 bags or SBA only 2-coin mint sets. I really like the proof coin because it is a P mint. Very unusual.
