Howdy msardo - Welcome to the Forum !!

Not real sure what you are asking about since the Eisenhower dollar was only made for 8 years - 1971 thru 1978. What is the date on your coin ?

    Doug,

I think he might be referring to the 1990 Eisenhower commemorative coin. If it came with a stamp, it sounds like a US Mint product. Kinda like the 1993 Jefferson Commem that came with a coin, stamp, and $2 FRN.

The mint did not release any special commemorative set for the Eisenhower coin. Sounds like a Franklin Mint type anniversary set.

    BTW, Welcome to CT Msardo.

In 1990 they released a commemorative silver dollar in Eisenhower's honor celebrating his 100th birthday. I don't know if it came with a stamp or anything though.

Yes, I am aware that the mint produced the Comm silver dollar...but there was no special comm set produced for this coin. Each coin (unc and proof) were packaged seperately and not in a two coin set. If one was made/produced it was done so outside the mint. The coin that msardo has is celebrating the 10th anniversary of something about Eisenhower.... the US mints coin is celebrating the 100 year anniversary of his birth.

I was referring to the original poster, he was an Ike set of some kind that has a stamped envelope.

Is this being sold on TV? I can't remember what I saw, but several items have been on the TV coin sales with a coin and a stamp.

That's what I'm trying to figure out. It sounds like this set is some kind of non-mint production celebrating 10 years related to Eisenhower. It must have a commemorative medal and a stamped envelope. The stamp was likely canceled on a certain date to commemorate whatever they set is for.

I am pretty sure this is what he is talking about - only with Eisenhower.

But I am not aware if the mint did first day covers with Eisenhower.

These coins are dated 1971 and postmarked 1979 (they have corresponding stamps). From what I understand, the coin was issued and then withdrawn in 1979.

What is sounds like you have is an item that was made by an outside party other than the mint. It probably has a real 1971 IKE dollar plus a comm envelope such as the one GD showed in the pic with canceled stamps. These types of items are not that uncommon. I have very similar items with the 1986 Statue of Liberty Half dollar and a first day cover and the 79-81 SBA first day covers. The statue of liberty one was put out by the Franklin Mint. These are not produced by the US Mint, but rather other third party companies.

As far as it being postmarked 1979, I don't doubt that since the series ended in 1978. Since it is stamped 1979, it is probably commemorating the 10years since the death of Eisenhower in 1969. Also with the coin being from 1971, it could also be celebrating the 10yrs since IKE left office which was in 1961. More likely to commemorate his death.

Definitely not from the mnt. Sounds like a PNC (Philatelic Numismatic Cover) and probably produced by the 99Company. They invented and produced a lot of PNC's starting with the first one in 1964 to mark the first day of the Kennedy half dollar.

It would be easierto figure out exactly what tenth anniversary they are commemorating if you gave us the full 1979 postmark date.

Since it is a 10th anniversary and released in 1979...it seems reasonable to think that it is commemorating something that happened with Eisenhower in 1969. I know that Eisenhower died on March 28, 1969, and it doesn't seem like he did anything significant in the months before that. They wouldn't commemorate the anniversary of his death...would they? That seems kind of odd to me.

They will commemorate anything if making money is involved. ;)

There's this from Danbury Mint [IMG]

and a Presidential Libraries Stamp from the USPS, but not with a coin [IMG]

The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower was commissioned in 1977 and a 10th anniversary cover was made 1987 [IMG]

My point exactly..... they will commemorate anything when there is money to be made. Who the heck cares about the commissioning of the USS DDE, let alone the 10yr anniversary of that day? Well somebody did.... enough anyway for the Danbury Mint to make a bunch of these and I am sure make some money while they were at it.
