For this coin, you don’t need to post your grade opinion. Just write it down with a pencil & tomorrow night I will post the TPG's grade opinion. It is still your job to guess what grade the TPG gave it. Tomorrow you get bragging rights if you guessed the same grade as the TPG. This proof coin has no hairlines but it does have a noticeable rub right on the cheek. This rub just lowers the grade.

It is an 1893 proof Morgan. That is a slightly better date. (Will that affect the grade?). The coin looks cameo when you look at it straight-on. At angles other than straight-on, you need to look for the cameo to see it. (Will that affect the grade?). The rub does not jump out at you under florescent lighting. However, under a point light source, the rub is easily seen as in the photo. During a quick glance on the bourse floor, this coin might look like a Gem Proof unless you know what to look for.

Write down your grade, don’t forget your designations such as FBL, Cameo, FH, etc. & leave cool comments here for the rest of us coin people.

    Very best regards,
    Collect89

I am amazed that they slabbed it at all.

Very beautiful coin imo!! The rub on the cheek is a bit distracting, and are those scratches on the coin or the slab? Either way, I wouldnt think its enough to be considered damage as it probably looks exaggerated in the photos. Besides that, it is a very nice looking coin!!

The scratches are on the coin but they are not that easy to see under normal bourse floor lighting. There is a quartz halogen lamp shining on the coin in the photo so you can really see the scratches at CT.

Wow they graded that the scratches are right in the focal area very distracting for a cameo proof coin.

Well it is tomorrow and still waiting. Got an idea but still think it would be hard for a TPG to find anything other than a body bag for this damaged coin. Still a nice looking coin once past the scratches on the primary focal area.

    And the answer is?

OK, I'm imagining a number between 62 and 64, and a designation between DCAM and nothing.

    Oh, damn.

Proof 62 even with the deep scratches

Just arrived home. This is sort of what the 1893 looks like on the bourse floor. As soon as you move it around under one lamp you can pick-up the scratches on the face.

Wow, amazing what a difference the lighting makes. I look at this picture, and say "Why is it a 62" then go back and look at the other photos and see the reason. A very instructive thread.
