I have decided to settle down with ancients and focus on a personal set. The Roman Imperial set is too large and impossible to complete. My Gorgona Medusa's are nice...but I need more variety (she's still my fav though) Soo...since I am into studying ancient Mythology, I figured it'd be cool to put together a Roman Diety set....I am not focusing on the Greeks, just Romans, as I know too little about Greeks at this time. Ok, I made a list of the Dieties I know that I need to complete this set...please add to the list if I am missing any, or please confirm if I have all of them Dieties on Roman Coinage: 1. Aesculapius 2. Apollo 3. Ceres 4. Cybele 5. Diana 6. Hercules 7. Janus 8. Jupiter 9. Juno 10. Liber 11. Mars 12. Mercury 13. Minerva 14. Neptune 15. Roma 16. Sol 17. Venus 18. Vesta 19. The Three Graces stainless
Nowhere near a complete list. Are you limiting it to Imperial, or are you including Provincial issues as well?
What I want to do is get one coin of each Diety ever put on a Roman coin, whether it is Provincal or Imperial. thanks stainless
BTW: I got the list using The Whitman Handbook to Greek and Roman Coins. It had these 19 for Dieties, but it looks like it just might be listed for just the Imperials? stainless
Good LUCK! That'll be an exceptional collection, should it ever be completed. Here's a partial list: http://www.beastcoins.com/Topical/Deities/AncientDeities.htm Don't forget to look at the coinage of Roman Egypt, lots of Egyptian or Romano-Egyptian syncratic gods are show. My favorites are Spes, Aurora, and Thanatos.
Thanks for the link..this should be fun . I'll start with the dieties, then move onto the personifications. stainless
Many of the Roman deities started out as Greek deities: Artemis / Diana: Syracuse, hemi litron from reign of Agathokleos, 317-289 BC. Arethusa: Ca. 410 BC, another hemi-litron. Persephone: Another hemi-litron ca. 344-317 BC. Athena: Eight Litrae ca. 317-289 BC, reign of Agathokleos.
how are you going to arange them? are you going to split it up roman/roman provicial/greek(if your gona do greek) in alphebetical order or all mixed to together. It might be cool to put them in order of hierarchy. Are you going to put decendants of gods like anaes?
