I know there is a lot of MD on this coin I can see it. I went to turn down my light a bit and BAM!! I think it's DD all over this, but going to ask anyway...lol The J on the initials on the back, both the date and the mint mark, GOD seems to be. I question the M in UNUM, as well as the N and T in Cent, and the ear. Shiny coins are bit harder to see. Is there a trick to seeing things with so much reflection, or just dim the light?
Also, with the new hubbing process, you won't get stuff like split serifs. Instead, the area in question will look spread out flatter like this: (Images from varietyvista.com)
According to Variety vista, Denver started the single-squeeze hubbing in 1996 and Philly started in 1997. That would make the 1995 Doubled Die the last TRUE doubled die IMO. http://varietyvista.com/25 What Are Die Varieties/Watershed Dates.htm
And that's why I haven't searched for any kind of Doubled Die varieties after that year.. To me it's not worth it. All that will be found are Millions of Die Deterioration and Mechanical doubling issues. Unfortunately they are shown here many times. But this is just my opinion. Sorry if anyone does not like my thoughts on the subject.
I agree 100%. The only post-95 cents I search are 98/99/00 for WAMs. I also only search for the "big" doubled dies (71, 72, 83, 84, 95). I can't be bothered with stuff I can't see with the naked eye.
I appreciate them, saves a lot of time! I just realized being new to coin searching for errors, we try to over evaluate everything!
I never want to discourage anyone from searching. I just wonder if newbies like you know that there are so many other neat issues to search for besides DDO and DDR varieties... Such as WAM's and CAM's.. MAD Strikes.. Die Breaks and Die Chips.. Die Clashes.. Even BIE's Do you know what those are?
I am jumping in because I am trying to understand die clashes and die breaks. Can toy explain please. Paddy helped me with die deterioration which I am thankful for. I got ccx 25 rolls of pennies that had hundreds of die deteriorations in them. Lol.
Yes, sir, I do. I just haven't found any of the CAM, WAM, or BIE's. I have posted a MAD a few days ago, but wasn't enough to make a holler about. It just had the defined lines between the two rims. Die clashes I'm still trying to learn how to see. I had about $30 in Lincolns cents that were all pre 1983. Most of them were in terrible shape.
Nobody said that something Wexler said is a DDO isn't. Re-read the thread. There is debate as to what is a worthwhile doubled die to look for. The major consensus is that anything after the single squeeze hubbing started aren't really worth looking for since they don't have much eye appeal.
But there's a 2019 D wddo-001 it's shown at John Wexler's website the die marker is a big die crack on the top left of the shield. It's a doubled ear variety.
Here's a good one on doubled dies for you, Tracy. It's as comprehensive as they come, it leaves nothing unsaid: https://doubleddie.com/58222.html.
Oh I know now thanks for correcting me. I thought you guys told someone that there's no ddo after 1996 or 1997 sorry about that. I'm new to the forum site. But not that new to collecting coins
