I have this coin and I see the edge it’s a bit different than other 2 Euro Cent coins I seen before. The channel in the middle of the edge looks too small. Does anyone have another 2 Euro Cent 2002 from France to confirm if is the same like this? If not maybe it’s a variety or mint error? Another question. This does have some nice details. May be proof or BU?
I'm not finding much information. Based on the picture of a euro 2 cent in the link below, the edge of your coin does look a little different. http://coinz.eu/deu/1_eur/02_2_euro_cent_from_2002_german_coins_en.php There were proof coins made in 2002, but none of the online pictures show the edge. Here is a link to a proof set: https://www.numisaisne.fr/en/coins/12612-france-euro-coin-set-proof-2002-monnaie-de-paris.html Your coin might be the proof version, but I can't tell or certain based on the photos.
If it is proof then the coin might need some cleaning because I see much dirt on it. I kept it for about 2 hours in 99.8% acetone before placing in cardboard but not too much change. I do not want to destroy the coin so I may look for professionals. I plan to ship a bunch of coins to NGC maybe they can clean it better. Thanks for help.
I would wait for some more opinions before sending to NGC. If it is a proof with no error, it probably isn't worth enough to be graded (the whole set sells for $35-$65). Grading fees will average $20-$25 and the coin might still not be worth that much in a slab.
I have a large hoard of Euro coins. (pocket change) I went through all the French 2 Cents and did not find a 2002. All the ones I looked at looked very similar to your groove.
Thanks for help. I add some more pictures to make comparsion with other 2 Euro Cent coin. Maybe someone can confirm another 2 Euro Cent edge groove like this. Maybe 0.2mm thickness. No matter year or country.
The 2002 French 2 Euro cent was only produced for sets and as proofs and have relatively low mintages 2002 165,290 In Sets only 2002 21,453 Proof https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces98.html
