Actually, Thomas, you have inspired ME in a lot of collecting areas, and have helped me search for more knowledge. I had meant to thank you for that some time ago. (re: Carthage, Etruria, etc.)
That is kinda why I got out of Modern US collecting 30 years ago. Slabs, Sheldon Scale, etc. in my view turned me off from that part of the Hobby. Ancients are loaded with History, very cool coins, and hand-made craftmanship! So much more variety than concerning yourself over mints, date changes, and micro-changes on a coin. Besides, many of the Modern coin designs are copies of Ancient Coins. I have heard you comment about those types of problems before. You also seem to drop in to the Ancients Forum a lot for a Modern collector. Maybe you should start seriously collect Ancients instead of commenting about all the Modern collectors? It is purdy cool here. Just a thought...
What I object to as it concerns "moderns" is the people who try to convince newcomers to the hobby that things like die cracks, grease-filled dies, die polish, etc. when given unusual names like "Spitting Eagle", "Spitting Horse", "Drooling Lincoln", "Pi$$ing Minuteman", etc. are valuable, and CT's "What's it Worth" forum has become nothing more than a menagerie for the P.T. Barnum's of the numismatic world. No, I have no real desire to enter the realm of "Ancients". You guys are doing a great job without my help. I'll stick with the "moderns" and continue to remind people about the true meaning of numismatics.
Agreed. I manufactured Steel, Plastics, Wood, and other products for over 40 years. Watching folks get excited over machine-made items, with minor mistakes, when millions, if not billions are made, is not too interesting to me. I de-stress here by enjoying Ancients as there is a lot of interesting History behind them, and worrying about sheldon scales or minor defects are non-existent. Personally, I do not think I am a numismatist, rather more of someone collecting Ancient Coins so that I have placemarkers in Human History. I feel it is more of a Hobby to me that way. Fun.
