    Hello all,

    I've bought myself another coin!

I found it in a Pawn shop. Opinions on the grade, please! 1858FlyerPawnObv.jpg 1858FlyerPawnRev.jpg 1858FlyerCentPawnInHolder.jpg

How did I do? I will follow-up with the price I paid.

And, by the last photo, you can see why I had a heart attack :wideyed:, when I saw it in its holder.

BTW, The holder was just stapled with 2 staples way up high, and I slid the coin right out the side.

I'll go with VF-35. Nice coin.

I would be around a VF, though FE cents always gave me fits. Btw, its a 1858 (large date I believe), not an 1856 like the label says. An 1856 is just a LITTLE more expensive....

:D A "little" more expensive. I crapped myself when I saw the holder. Thank you for your input on the Large Letters. I could not determine it myself, even with pictures.

    I knew I couldn't get to an XF-40.....

and no trace of the 8/7 overdate, correct?

Now, how much is a VF-35 worth?

My guess before I read the comments was VF. I've never heard why they changed to the Indian Head after only 3 yrs of production.

Thanks for sharing the Ebay coins, Fret.

    Well, I paid $25.

I think is may be worth $45-50.

The shopkeeper called them "three cent" coins. That was a dead giveaway he knew little about what he has. There are a LOT of raw coins and slabbed as well. I intend to have a look through as much as possible. His prices are generally high.

There is another 1858 Flying Eagle at this shop, but I didn't get it because it has a spot of verdigris on both sides. I can see in the Ebay coin a similar spot.

Should I go ahead and buy the other one with the spot for $25?

I'm sorry, but how can any self-respecting coin dealer confuse a coin clearly marked ONE CENT as a 3 cent piece?!?!

You did very well! As far as buying the other one, if you're gonna sell on ebay go ahead! :D I have one, not as nice as yours but I like it! Says mine has a scratch, but it's nothing, it's really tiny I didn't even notice it until they slabbed it! :D

He's not a coin dealer, per se. It is a Pawn/Collectible boutique. They have a huge amount of varied goods. It is a very upscale place. There are 5-6 employees on the floor, but I don't think they know much about coins except to post a sign that the prices are based on the current metal prices.

Maybe you'll score a certified trade dollar advertised as "kennedy half dollar"

The guy says his 'coin guys/clients' like to come in on Saturday and spend some time. But how come one of them didn't pick up this FE, seeing it as a bargain? I think I will spend some 'time' there on Friday. I just don't know what I will come across and I don't have the knowledge in my head for all sorts of coins, apart from researching them first. I am thinking it couldn't hurt buying the other 1858 for $25. Maybe it's a better grade as well. I am not looking to sell anything on Ebay, or anywhere for the time being. Just looking for bargains to add to My Father's Collection.

    :hilarious:
WHO KNOWS???? I am trying to be 'low profile' and say things like "please, can I see that coin in the 'plastic case' instead of 'slab.' I don't want to reveal myself. (not saying that I know much at all...)
They do have lots of shiny, shiny proof sets. But I am looking for that old, old hidden gem.
