Counterfeit proofs?

Has anybody ever heard of a proof coin being counterfeited? Wouldn't they be a lot tougher to counterfeit? Does anybody think there's places that have made them or tried?

I guess what I'm wondering is, could you always just assume that a proof coin is authentic? And if it was tried, would it be easier to replicate an old one over a modern?

I think our Chinese friends have produced forgeries of certain older coins that were only minted in proof... but of course, the fakes do not have the appearance of proofs. I'm not sure if they could economically produce a genuine appearing proof (but... give them time!).

It's all about $$$. If it becomes a viable option financially, it'll get done.
