Dark toning on silver dollars

I recently picked up the attached Peace Dollar. I've never seen such a dark toned silver dollar. It looks even darker than the photos show. Does dark toning like this add to the value? Would TPG consider it negative? Thanks for any thoughts! IMG_20200810_220042810.jpg IMG_20200810_220042810.jpg IMG_20200810_215943431.jpg IMG_20200810_220021320.jpg

I think it's OK for an AU peace dollar. Is there luster under the toning?

That kind of toning would neither add nor detract value from the coin, in my opinion. It is neutral in terms of eye appeal. Of course that is largely a matter of personal preference, so different folks will have different answers to that question.

It's a 1921 Peace, so that's nice. I've seen many 1921 coins with streaky, tobacco-brown toning. At least you don't have that.

But of course that only speaks to the eye appeal. Which brings us to your second question. Is that original or secondary toning? Did the coin have an old cleaning in the past and subsequently retone... or not? That I am unable to tell from the photos. You can bet that the TPGs would be able to tell, though.

Those lighter, drop-like spots out in the field in front of Liberty's face and forehead make me wonder. But otherwise it looks OK to me? Not fantastic, but certainly not bad, either.

Silver toning to a shade of grey, dark grey, and even black is perfectly normal. Grey and dark grey is also the most common color of toning there is for silver, any silver.

Very normal toning. I personally would not care for it but it's fine. It's also a 1921.

Welcome to CT @GL33 and thanks for posting your photos Full Image. Makes it a lot easier to view. The toning might be a negative if it is hiding an old cleaning. I'm not saying the coin was cleaned, but has some suspicious spots on it.

I like the surfaces of it. A crusty original skin au peace dollar and a good date too

As I have often said on here, you just gotta love a silver dollar. That one looks OK to me. If it was ever cleaned, it was a long time ago.

Thanks for the comment, I'm not sure about luster. Her neck on the obverse reflects a dark, dark blue would that be luster?

Welcome aboard! Most CT members will be polite and considerate in their comments. Only a very few might seem rude or crass, so don't be too thin skinned when they surface. If you have neat coins, post them for us all to enjoy.

Not a fan of the darker tone, but Peace Dollars are known for toning very little

I understand what you mean, but what you said isn't accurate. All coins tone, all of them.

The accurate way to say what you're trying to get across is that Peace dollars are not generally known to have colorful, pretty, rainbow toning. Some do, but it's not very common.
