Doug You are paid the big bucks to think these things out. Pretty solid way to go, I submit ( the seller ) . OK, you got me. I am trying to come up with a way to seperate myself from the rest. Grade guarantees, best policys, user friendly, returns, ..... anything to stand out When it comes to my series, I think I can stand with anybody on the grading. What else is there? Help me out here.
That's all there is Jack, and it will be a plus. As long as you are 100% honest, sell only problem free coins or coins with problems being accurately described, sell for fair prices, and offer a no questions asked return policy (as long as the coin is in the original holder - that is a MUST) - there is nothing more that a customer can ask for. Do those things - always - and you will go far.
Aj, you can definetely grade with the best of them. I would be concerned with the scumbags of the biz. I would submit the coin for them. I would also get a sticker deal going, sort of like rick snow uses with his eagle eye stickers. I would get my high end lincolns stuck with the AJ sticker.
The guy that runs Sample Slab.com always had a grade guarantee on his raw Ebay items. You might could email him and ask how it worked. Speedy
Doug You are describing what we want the coin biz to be. I see zero problems following your biz model.
excuse me, I need to run around the block 7 times to calm myself down...I won 2 svdb; a 1914-d and a cpl others breath deep slow down chill out yeahhhhhhhhhhhh
Well allthatjazzjazz on ebay has guaranteed they grade MS, but not the number they put after it. 30 day return priviledge. Great guy(IMO) - one of my dad's favorite sellers. He has changed his tune over the years on TPG's. Is it possible to have it slabbed for them? Charge them the fee's you would pay to PCGS or NGC? I am thinking if I wanted it graded by PCGS I would have to join. Not sure about this idea - but I like your concept.
Perhaps you could guarantee TPG grading on higher ticket items at no charge and on lower ticket items for $10 or $15 dollars. Advertise that you will gladly send the coins to the TPG for the buyer. This might work for you if operate like GDJMSP suggests & you do a volume of business. I never hesitate to buy from my friendly dealer Ed and his son Lance. If I'm wrestling with a coin purchase decision, they have guaranteed that it will grade. They do this on a case-by-case basis & they have been consistent with the grade opinions. I bought a semi key V-nickel in 64 and it came back 63 one time. Maybe it would come back 64 if submitted again. I didn't even think about sending it back to Ed & Lance because IMO they were always trying to be honest & fair to me. Very best, collect89
I know this much, building a trademark takes time. FWIW, if I were you, I'd forget the gimmicks, and concentrate on just good customer service.
I think its very honorable and noteworthy to stand behind ones product. However dishonest people will try to take advantage of the honest ones. Its a fact of life. Fortunately from what I've seen the honest ones tend to outnumber the dishonest for the moment. Go Jack!!!!
I have no idea how many stories I have heard of TPG's misgrading coins. To wit, that S VDB you just had regraded. If they cannot repeat within a couple of grades all of the time, how on earth are you going to guarantee what they will (cannot?) do. Even if the buyers do not try to scam you, I think that you are just opening yourself up for too many problems to make it worth it.
Got to agree with Doug Jack - I think the only way to do this grading guarantee is if the coin never leaves your hand to the buyer. If people want a slab guarantee, then they want the coin slabbed. Thus, you offer this service (if only slabbed through you) and will REFUND their money upon receipt if the coin comes back from the TPG outside your guarantee. So, when buyer's want this, they will send you the money for the coin plus the slabbing fee. You refund both as needed. There are collectors who don't know how to work with the TPGs or do not want the hassle filling out forms or paying the membership fees. You would be offering them a valuable service for doing this on their behalf that goes beyond the grading guarantee. Another competitive edge. I think you have a great idea and it will distinguish you from others whether they want the slab or not. Sometimes just saying it is guaranteed is enough to sway someone to buy from you.
grade guarantee, who does it? ............how long before the subject of CAC is brought in to the equation?
Jack, it seems to me that you are giving up all of the potential upside in your coins while accepting all of the downside risk. It down't seem like a great idea to me. Congrats on the newps.
From a monetary point of view I agree 100%. But from an improvement of reputation point of view - they will love him for it. The whole thing hinges on his ability to be right in predicting the TPG grade. If he is good at it, downside is minimal. If he is not, he'll lose out on the potential upside and the downside. So you are right Cave, there is a definite risk.
Ok. A point of clarification. How would this be any different than any "reputable" coin site out there? If I'm browsing their online catalog and it says XF-40, I assume they stand behind that grade - and they probably have a blurb somewhere stating as such and if I e-mailed them, they would probably respond as such. I guess you "guarantee" it'll slab at that grade. Yeah. I dunno. If I were Joe CoinCollector and stumbled on your site, it wouldn't be enough for me - too much snake oil on the Internet. Oh and the world's best picture is no proof or anything that that is the coin you sent. heck I have a lot of copies of coins people have posted on this site. Doesn't mean I sent that one to you yesterday! Run Forest! Run!
Other than what a few have mentioned in this thread, I know of and have never even heard of a dealer who will guarantee that a raw coin he has graded as MS64 or XF45 will be graded that by NGC or PCGS. It is just not done.
