i dont know the date or mint mark of this coin but it has been cut and carved to make a pin. it weighs about 2/3 of a typical morgan dollar would
Well.. People turn coins into all kinds of stuff. I have seen Silver Quarters and Kennedy's turned into guitar picks. There are collectors who like numismatic related items like money clips and jewelry. If it bothers you then get rid of it.
Coins have been used to adorn all manner of adornment. Buttons, money clips, tie clasps, necklaces.... I have a beautiful MS Franklin half encased in a block of Lucite as a paper weight on my desk at work.
Yes, these are all over. I inherited an 1898 Morgan encased in a bezel of some sort. As usual, I have no information on why it was put in a bezel, whether someone wore it as a necklace or whatever. But someone found it worth keeping and it came my way as the guy in the family "who's into coins." I would like to free it but the effort probably wouldn't be worth it and it would probably destroy or severely damage the coin the in the process. All I can do is wonder why someone went to the trouble.
I occasionally do scrollsaw work with wood. It can be quite tedious. And then I see something like this and my jaw just drops.
