Sniped. Perhaps it was for the best? Help me feel better!

I was watching this lot of 16 unidentified Roman coins on ebay for the last week or so and finally decided to place my bid. I was winning up until the last 5 seconds when I couldn't up my bid :(

There were a few coins in particular that I was interested in. Can you guess which ones? :) I did some research on vcoins and think I had a good bid at $115 since there wasn't a ton of bidding on it. I was beaten by a $117.50 bid.

Tell me that I got lucky by not winning this lot. Make me feel better :)...or tell me I should've put in a higher bid.

It always depend on the wife. But don't tell yourself I lost it by 2.50$!; maybe the other bidder was willing to go up to 150$...

    True true.

I recently got refunded for a concert ticket to a band I have been wanting to see for 20+ years. I spent almost $200 on the ticket and the show was scheduled for the end of this month. It was postponed until 2021 but then was cancelled a few weeks ago. The only other time I had the chance to see them was 16 September, 2001...Needless to say, they have been my "white whale" for a long time. I was pretty bummed when the show was cancelled.

I've had this money sitting in my play account and I have been trying to find solace in retail therapy. I thought this was going to be a great little pick up. Perhaps I should just transfer it back to the joint account and forget about the concert and coins lol.

My hope is that the coins went to someone here on the forum :)

A little something for everyone. I see a scarce Byz in the upper right of the photo. An Arab/Byz struck in Egypt most likely from Upper Egypt. An interesting lot.

That being said, trying to follow the sniper could have gotten a lot more expensive. So many coins, so little time...but so many more out there.

    Hmm.. fun looking lot.
Who knows on price.. you offered $7ish per coin.. is $10 per coin a fair price?
Maybe.. But you can buy one or 2 beauties for $160.
Just depends on where you want to put your resources.

I've never bid on a lot before. The closest I've come to "random" "lots" was from the Harlan J. Berk "junk" bin at the Baltimore Whitman show where FFIVN and I picked through and pulled out 8 coins for $100.

Too bad but don't worry about it. I've been sniped many times, even on CNG auctions amongst others where I was a high bidder until seconds were left in the auction. Can't really do anything about it so the best posture to adopt is one of Stoicism. What would Marcus Aurelius say about it? Courage, Justice, Temperance, and Wisdom. More coins will come your way. But I did see the Arab-Byzantine, an Alexandrian piece, two Florians, a Galeria Valeria, a Constantius I Follis, maybe a Constantius II, and so on.

Right. Temperance and Wisdom. Still need to work on those. :)
There also looked to be a Herod Agrippa as well. A really interesting lot. FFIVN and I haven't set a defined collecting focus yet, though he loves Chinese cash and I have a thing for Byzantines, so we are really just interested in collecting new examples of things we haven't seen before and learning as much history as we can behind the coins.

I feel you were better off losing. For the money, you could have bought 3 or 4 better coins including a Florian if there is some reason you want his coin. I buy lots when there is something there I want that would be hard to find elsewhere. I have one Florian and that is enough for me. If the lot had been 16 Byzantine or 160 cash (not Northern Song - you have enough of them), that would be different.

Again, Temperance and Wisdom. Both things I need to work on.

FFIVN and I have quite a task ahead of us working on his new cash. That should keep us going for quite some time. Him identifying and me photographing.

Perhaps I invested too much emotion in this lot. Watching it for so many days and working on identifying the coins ahead of time. Counting my chickens before they hatched.

    Still alot to learn.

That Florian on the bottom left is excellent, but if you don't care about the rest of the coins, you end up paying a lot for just a couple coins.

I always say if I get out-snipped that I lucked out... Often times I saved myself from spending too much, and breathe a big sigh of relief... It's probably not the best way of doing it but hey it's at least entertaining. I'd say my history has proved that you saved yourself from biting a bullet that you wouldn't have liked if you bid more. We all have our limits. And they're there to protect us lol.

The psychology of bidding wars usually ends up in the winner paying more than they wanted to.

Haha. Rammstein. German Industrial Metal. They have one of the biggest pyrotechnic shows ever.

I commiserate, FF02! I was watching that lot. But I did not bid - it went out of my price range.

But I do like eBay lots like this. Lots to figure out when they are unattributed, and the price per coin is often very appealing to my budget. In this case $7.34 (if I'm doing the math right). A decent Herod Agrippa, a Salonina that is actually silver...some iffy stuff, but overall I'd say not a bad deal.

Or you could keep the economy going and purchase one of the coins you have wanted. Just saying... :)
