I have just very recently started collecting. I came across this 1929 (partial date) buffalo nickel that has what appears to be an indention that goes around the entire reverse side just inside the edge of the coin. With the pictures I have, is there any way in telling if this was done at the mint or if this is just damage done throughout the years? There doesn't appear to be a ring similar to it on the obverse side. I know it's not worth much, but I'm just curious. Thank you in advance. I very much appreciate it. Also, thank you so much for letting me join the community.
I don't think there is any doubt that the damage was done by a coin rolling machine, so PMD, post mint damage, not a mint error. Welcome to CT @BalamSmith. Looking forward to seeing some of your coins. What series interests you the most?
Also, not to beat this point to death, but when posting photos the below is a guideline. You should always post FULL IMAGE photos (after you upload your photo, two buttons appear: Thumbnail and Full Image, click Full Image and your photo appears full size on your post and is easily enlarged by clicking on it. Always show both the obverse and reverse, even if your question is just about one side. Members can often give more valuable information having both sides to evaluate. Crop out superfluous background so just the coin shows, and post photos with correct orientation so members don't have to turn their computer in some awkward fashion to view it properly. Add close ups of areas you have questions about and make your questions as definitive as possible so we know what you are asking for. And try to have the best lighting possible to show the most favorable photo of the coin. Hope this helps in the future. Good luck.
I really appreciate the welcome and the guidelines. I read through the rules but I must have not absorbed all of them. I will definitely follow these guidelines from here on out. I really don't have much at the moment. I literally just decided it was something I wanted to get into within the last couple of weeks. My dad has a decent collection and was part of my influence to start. But as I go, I'll post more on here. Thanks a lot!
Thanks for your post. I have poorly attempted to offer these comments in the past, but your summation gives a new member the proper information to effectively utilize this forum. You should thread this guideline so others can use it to indoctrinate new members.
Thanks Robert. Like some other members that focus on using specific words or numismatic terms, I obsess on the posters photos as my eyes just aren't what they used to be and I dislike having to click on thumbnails to see the coins. LOL I guess I should make it a newbie post.
Please do post your collection. There are a lot of very experienced and renowned members on CT that can be helpful when members have questions. We would love to see what you have and help answer any questions that come up. I hope that you will carry on your dad's interest in collecting coins. Oh yeah, don't forget currency also. Check out that forum too.
