Actually I think the future will be coinless. The only paying methods will be cards, chips or some other boring ****. But if the alternative is colored coins I will embrace what ever they come up with.

I have no problem with colorized commemorative coins. If the US mint produced a colorized coin that looked nice...like that Canadian bullion piece, I wouldn't be opposed. I don't see it becoming common on circulating coins (I just don't think it would look good because of wear)...but on commemoratives, why not. I wouldn't want all our commemorative coins in color as I like the classic colorless look, but for some of them, I see no harm as long as it is done tastefully.

This is only the case for the original Poppy quarter. The Pink Ribbon quarter still circulates quite a bit and I've yet to see one with anything more than very minimal wear. I must admit, though, that if the Canadian mint does the colourized quarter too often, then it will lose it's appeal. I think they just wanted a second chance at the poppy.

Washington quarters were frequently found in circulation with red nail polish on the obverse. Does anyone remember them & why were they circulated?

    Very best regards,

OK this is before my time so your going to have to fill in the lore on this.

Rather than speculate, I'll let you pontificate.

    Geeeeez Ruben - I don't pontificate  I just talk a lot :D

The quarters with red fingernail polish on them, (have seen all colors over the years but red was the most commonly used) were house quarters. The owner of the bar would have some in the cash register, so when things were slow the bartender could hand out a quarter to a regular and say go play the jukebox.

When the vending machine guy came by, all the red quarters were pulled out and given back to the bartender. That money was not split - it was house money. It was a standard prcatice pretty much nationwide.

I think that since we all will never agree on colorized coins, I think this thread should be closed and made into a poll. What do you think?

I don't know about closing the thread, but feel free to start a poll yourself. I'll be glad to vote on it.

Join a forum and ask who liked Painted Currency and Coins! Do you prefer acrylic or oils?

I have found a black and white one in circulation. They were both from the 70's.
I actually remember reading about that in a coin magazine.

Just an aside, but how do the colored coins hold up in circulation? How quickly does the color wear off?

    Nail polish is incredibly resilient
