I know they didn't make any 1977 S Pennies, but it looks like there is an S below the date between the 9 and 7. Any ideas of what this is? 1977 S Penny.jpg

Your photo is too out of focus to make out much detail. I'm sure it is simply a scratch that looks like an 'S'.

probably from corrosion , it looks to me like if you looked anywhere else on the coin you could probably see what looks like the same thing.

I can kind of make out the S. In addition to what Hobo and rascal said, it may very well be an attempt at doctoring the coin.

I can't tell anything from the picture, but they only produced proof Lincolns in 1977 and it doesn't look like a proof.

It's amazing what the eye and brain can "see" that isn't there.

Well that picture is blurry, but there is something that looks like a faint, crude S. Copying the picture and then sharply increasing the contrast helps to notice it.

  10. condor 101 what you just said is why i never send off any coins to be graded. Why would anyone think that a few people know all and will grade each coin in the same way.Just because a name is not use when the coin is graded dosent mean a number cant be used to let the grader know that the one who sent it pays the bill with the amount they send. Also look at the reslabed coins that get higher or lower grades when they are sent back after being soild. If its done by human it will never be perfect as we all have off days and ones who get coins slabed to resale pay the bills for those who grade them.

Yep! I remember watching horror movies late at night when I was just a kid, and when I eventually went to bed, there were all kinds of things moving around in the dark.

Good post Condor . I wanted to say the same thing . that's why I said one could look about anywhere on this coin and probably see the same thing. our eyes can play tricks on us. a good example is the poor old ebay lady that used to imagine her 1909 cents had a S and VDB on everyone she put on ebay. funny thing is she got by with selling some of them but most were returned to her.

I assume by "they" you mean the San Francisco Mint. The Philadelphia and Denver Mints both produced over 4 billion Lincoln Cents in 1977.

Before you guys go off on the whole imagination/placebo thing, consider that there is something in the pics. I've blown it up, added contrast and outlines the S shape in orange dots.
It doesn't mean there is anything really on the coin, but there does appear to be a crude S in the pics.
I realize these blurry pics are basically like a Rorschach though. =)

I found one in a collection I purchased and another from a unc-mint set. Here is a pic of the one from the mint set.

That did not come from an "unc mint set". They are proofs and originally came in proof sets.
