Hi everyone, Just found this quarter penny yesterday, not a lot to say about it really! I just thought I would share it with you all. I am definately not expecting anyone to come back and tell me which king it is, ah ha ! The obverse is as can be seen totally worn unfortunately.
That is a nice cut farthing @clanger congrats on a cool find. I am quite envious, and would love to be able to find medieval coins.
Certainly making an ID from a cut quarter is more a matter of luck than skill but some we win. This farthing is from King John issued by moneyer Walter from London. There are lists of which names were used at which mints under which kings. Some quarters of the portrait allow ID better than others and having the WA on the reverse ID's the moneyer while other quarters with ON LVND would have not. I am far from expert enough to read yours from the photo but the people who handle these all the time might actually be able to make something out. Still, the odds are that any quarter may not tell enough to be sure.
