It was the last issue of the Early Commemoratives coins.
    It's the Carver/Washington commemorative.
    Yours is a 1952 (I don't see a mint mark).
The design was struck from 1951 through 1954 by all 3 Mints.
Commemorative coins were not struck again until the 1982 George Washington 250th Anniversary of Birth.

Very interesting. Thank you for the information! I think I can make out a slight D on the back.

Mint mark should be right above the C at the bottom of the reverse. I don't see anything. This and the Booker T. Washington are the most affordable "classic" commemorative halves. Wonder if anyone has found any roll hunting?

Per Redbook...."Money obtained from the sale of these commemoratives was to be used to 'oppose the spread of Communism among Negroes in the interest of national defense'."

If I look real close it looks as if there was a D at some point but it is badly worn. Also I think it must have been one with the States shown in the reverse, not USA and it's been really worn

OMGOSH!!!!! I just realized I spelt coun instead of coin!!!! This happens to me often but I usually catch it!! I pray to God no one thinks I was referring to anyone as a coun!!! I've got to try to edit it!!!!! I'm mortified!!

OK, what I did is to click on "Report" below the post. This goes to a moderator who has more powers to do stuff than us mere members, asking them to change the word. I don't think anyone takes offence.
